The Cousin Nobody Sits With

This message is for The man at a family gathering who has been shown a great deal of mercy himself, and who is walking past the one cousin everybody has quietly agreed to leave alone.

The shade tree does most of the work at a thing like this. Everything that matters happens under it or within about forty feet of it, and by four in the afternoon the whole gathering has drifted into that circle like water finding a low spot.

Horseshoes clank down at the far end. Somebody's kid has the hose and is being negotiated with. The food table has been picked over twice and there is still more coleslaw than any family could reasonably use. The air smells like cut grass and charcoal and the inside of a cooler.

Ray is coming back from the table with two paper plates, one in each hand, both of them bending in the middle the way paper plates do when you put anything real on them.

Denny is sitting in a folding chair right at the edge, where the shade runs out and the sun starts. One leg crossed over the other. Paper plate balanced on his knee. He is watching the horseshoe pit with the expression of a man judging a competition he was never entered in.

People pass him all afternoon. That is the thing to notice, because nobody is being ugly here. His aunt said hey Denny on her way by. A cousin brought him a drink and set it on the arm of the chair and went back to the conversation. Nobody has said one unkind word to him all day.

They just do not stop.

The talking closes back up behind him like water. Whichever group he stands near reorganizes itself about eleven seconds later. And he has been at this long enough now to save everybody the trouble, which is why he took the folding chair at the edge in the first place, and why he has been in it for two hours.

Everybody knows what he did.

I am not going to tell you what it was. That is not me being coy. It is the whole argument of this article, and it will take the rest of the page to explain why.

Ray stands there with two plates. And here is the part that has been sitting in his chest since about noon: nine years ago it was Ray at the edge of the shade. Different trouble, entirely his own making, and this exact family came to his house with a chainsaw and a casserole dish and worked in his yard for a whole Saturday, and not one of them asked him to explain himself. Not one. He has never gotten over it. He tells that story at least twice a year.

He looks at the two plates in his hands. One of them is his.

The heat is coming off the grass. Somebody wins at horseshoes and there is a small roar.

You are holding two plates as well. Not literally, maybe. But there is somebody in your life whose situation you could describe in one sentence, and you have said that sentence before, and it is accurate, and it is the reason you have been walking past. You know exactly how they got there. Everything reasonable in you says they built the thing they are sitting in. And there is a strange discomfort under your ribs today that will not be argued down, and it feels a lot like being handed something.

The Question Was Never About The Ledger

At the end of one of the sharpest things Jesus ever told, a master turns on a servant and asks him a single question. Not a lecture. A question, seven words long, and it does not ask about the accounts at all.

You are standing today inside mercy that you never argued your way into. Matthew 18:33 asks one thing, and it is not a question about who was in the right, and the Spirit is not waiting for you to finish building a case before He moves your hands.

Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?Matthew 18:33

Read what it does not say. It does not say your fellow servant deserved it. It does not say he had cleaned himself up first, or explained, or made it right. It does not even say he asked nicely. The whole weight of that sentence rests on one comparison, and both halves of the comparison are about the person doing the giving.

You have been carried by exactly this kindness at least once, and you know the year it happened. The Spirit was in that year long before anybody in your family named Him in it, and it is written into Titus 3:5 in plain words: He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His own mercy.

Now, this is a site about mercy and not about forgiveness, and the difference matters right here more than anywhere else. Forgiveness is what happens when somebody owes you and you release it. That is a real and holy thing, and it is somebody else's article. Mercy is what happens when a person in front of you has a need and your hands meet it, and it is entirely possible to do that with the ledger still open and unsigned.

Which is why I am not going to tell you what Denny did.

Because the second you know, you start doing arithmetic. You weigh it. You compare it against what you have done and what you have been let off, and you arrive somewhere, and the arriving takes the afternoon, and the plate goes cold in your hand.

You are being asked for your hands and not for your verdict. That is Scripture, not sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps it from hardening into one more rule you have to keep.

Your Hands Can Move Before Your Mind Is Made Up

Here is the objection, and it is a fair one, so let us have it out in the open. It feels dishonest. It feels like walking a plate over to somebody while a whole sentence about them is still running in your head, and that feels like pretending.

It is not pretending. It is order of operations.

You are holding a plate, and a plate has never once required its carrier to have made up his mind. You do not have to take that from me. His word says that as we have opportunity, we are to do good to all, Galatians 6:10, and the Spirit is what carries a line like that off the page and across forty feet of cut grass.

You have permission to act before your feelings have caught up, and that is not hypocrisy. No opinion of mine could grant anybody that. Scripture does, and His Spirit does, because in Luke 10:33 the compassion and the climbing down off the animal arrive in the same sentence, and the account never once asks which of them came first.

That is the mercy this site is about. Not a feeling you work up in the kitchen before you are allowed out of it. An action, sized for today, aimed at a need you can actually see.

And notice what you are not being asked to do. You are not being asked to announce anything. There is no speech in this. Nobody has to stand up under a shade tree and say that he has reconsidered, or that he was wrong, or that he now sees it differently. A speech would make it about you anyway.

You are being handed a way to be merciful that requires you to say nothing at all about the past. It is written down, in James 2:13, that mercy triumphs over judgment, and the same Spirit who set those two words in that order is at work in a man standing in the grass holding both of them at once.

Judgment is not being asked to disappear. It is being asked to lose. There is a difference, and the difference is a plate.

The breakthrough

So take this before you do anything else with it, because it is not the payment for a task completed.

You are being met by a God who settled nothing about you before He came. He promised no conditions at all in Romans 5:8, while we were still sinners, and His Spirit puts that sentence down underneath the place where all your arguing happens.

That is the thing about the year the family showed up at Ray's house with the chainsaw. It ruined him for judgment, permanently, and he has never once been able to explain why to anybody who was not there. Something you receive without deserving it does that. It does not make you soft in the head. It makes you unable to enjoy the arithmetic anymore.

You have already been given anyway, and it has been the quiet fact underneath your entire life. That is written, not worked up, and His Spirit is what makes it move from a thing you agree with to a thing you are standing in.

You are not being billed for it. There is no ledger opening on you at the end of this page and no debt being transferred to your account. What is happening is simpler. A man who has been carried is being invited to notice what is in his hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the kitchen, with the lid still in your hand. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not mine to hand out. It is Christ's, and in Him it has been given to you to speak what He has already settled. What He does after that is His to decide, and however He answers, what you spoke stays true.

  1. Empty chair at the edge of the shade, you are not a courtroom bench. The Word says mercy triumphs over judgment, and this whole yard belongs to the mercy. Today a plate gets carried to somebody.
  2. Fear of what the family will think, get off my hands. Jesus sat down and ate with the ones the whole town had already sorted out, and I am His. In the name of Jesus, my hands move before my mind is made up.
  3. Lord, You came while nothing about me was settled and You never stopped to make a speech about it. Your word says You had mercy on me first, and Your Spirit is doing that same work at my counter tonight. I am making one extra portion and I am naming nobody.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
