The kettle clicks off and Vera does not pour, because there is a shape behind the frosted panel of her back door and she knows the shape.
She knows a great deal about the shape. She could give you four years of it, in order, without raising her voice. The shed. The van that sat on the shoulder of the lane with no plates on it until somebody came about it. The two places he has been asked to leave. The Sunday he stood at the end of her path telling her something that was not so, and the way he said it, easily, the way a person says a thing he has said before to somebody else.
She has an opinion. She built it slowly and honestly out of things she saw with her own eyes, and she could set it out in front of anybody in this valley and they would nod.
The knock comes again, two soft ones, apologetic.
The power is off at the top of the lane. It has been off since four thirty. He wants to know if she has a candle, or a flashlight, or if her phone has any signal, and the rain has gone through the shoulders of his jacket and made two dark shapes there like wings.
And here is the thing Vera would tell you if she trusted you enough to tell you anything: the verdict does not switch off. It runs the whole time. It runs while she takes the mug down. It runs while she pours, and it is still running when she puts her hand on the latch. It is not that she stops thinking what she thinks. She thinks it more clearly than ever, holding the handle of a hot kettle, and every fact of it lines up and stands to attention, and none of them are wrong.
She opens the door about eighteen inches. She gives him the mug and the flashlight from the drawer under the sink and a candle in a jar, and she says the weather is supposed to lift by nine.
She does not say what she thinks. Not a word of it, not a flicker, not the small tight smile that says it without saying it.
He says thanks. He goes back up the lane with the light bobbing.
Vera shuts the door and stands in her own kitchen with her back against it, and the verdict is still there, standing at the counter where she left it, entirely intact and completely unemployed.
You know that kitchen. You have somebody whose road you could trace out on paper, every turn of it, and you would be within your rights. You may well be right. You may have every fact of it in the right order. And having it in the right order has not once made an evening easier, and there is something you are holding that would help, and the holding has begun to cost you more than the giving would.
The Verdict And The Hands Are Two Different Muscles
Almost everyone who gets stuck here is stuck for the same reason, and it is a reason that sounds like integrity. It goes: I cannot give while I still think what I think, because that would be a lie.
But it would not be a lie. It would be a hand moving while a mind is unfinished, and that is not hypocrisy. It is most of adult life.
You are holding two things at once tonight, and only one of them has to move. Psalm 103:10 already said that He has not dealt with us after our sins, and the Spirit is not asking you to invent a kinder rule tonight than the one He wrote down Himself.
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.Psalm 103:10
Read what that verse does and does not do. It does not say the sins were not sins. It does not revise the record, argue the case, or find anybody innocent. The record stands exactly as it was. What changed was what He did next, and He did it with the file still open on the desk.
That is the shape of mercy and it is the only shape it has ever had. Not a verdict overturned. A verdict declining to run the hands.
You have been given leave to act before the question is settled. You are not taking my word for it. Romans 5:8 says that Christ died for us while we were still sinners, which is to say the question was wide open and the giving happened anyway, and the Holy Spirit is what carries that off a page and into a kitchen where a kettle has just clicked off.
Nobody Is Asking You To Change Your Mind
I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this message that turns into a demand that you feel differently, and that version is cruel and it does not work.
You are not being asked to decide he is a good man. You are not being asked to say you were wrong about the van, or the shed, or the Sunday at the end of the path. Nobody is coming for your opinion. You are not being asked to change your mind before your hands are allowed to move. No sentence of mine could hand you that. Scripture does, in Luke 6:35, where He is described as kind to the unthankful, and His Spirit does the handing.
Which is a relief, if you sit with it, because the demand to feel differently is the thing that has kept you frozen for four years. You have been waiting to become the sort of person who could give that without resenting it, and that person has not arrived, and you have concluded that until she does the giving would be false. So nothing goes out at all.
You were met once by Someone who had every fact in front of Him and poured anyway. It is written down, in Matthew 5:45, that He sends His rain on the just and on the unjust, and the same Spirit who put that line there is standing at your counter while you read it. He is not sentimental about anybody. He simply does not run His giving off His weighing.
And this is where the ground under all of it has to be said out loud, because without it the whole thing is just moralizing. You have already been dealt with far better than you were owed, and that is the ground under your feet. Ephesians 2:4 calls Him rich in mercy toward us. That is His word and not my sympathy, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it move.
Nothing here makes you responsible for what becomes of him. You are not being handed a road to fix, an outcome to produce, or a person whose life is now partly your project. A flashlight is a flashlight. It is finished when the power comes back on.
Something can turn here, tonight, with the question still exactly where it was when you sat down.
You are being handed one small act and no obligation to feel anything different about anybody. Lamentations 3:22 says His mercies are new every morning, and the Spirit is the one who can make a morning out of an evening like this one. New every morning is not a promise that anybody changes. It is a description of how He keeps coming.
Two things this is not. It is not a person to save, and nothing tonight loads the outcome of anybody's road onto your shoulders. And if the face that arrived while you were reading is a face it would not be safe for you to be near, then this is not about them, and it never was. Mercy has never once required a person to walk toward harm. If what is actually in view is danger, for you or for them, then the merciful thing is a human being with a phone: emergency services, or a crisis line, today. That is not a smaller mercy. It is the right one.
You have mercy in your hand right now with the question still wide open. That is not a thing I can make true by saying it. His word says in Romans 12:19 that the weighing belongs to Him and never to us, and His Spirit is what quietly takes the scales out of a pair of hands that were never built to hold them.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking yourself into a change of heart you have not had. Christ is in you, and the mercy is His and was given to you long before you had an opinion about anybody, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old line in a psalm live rather than sit quietly on a page. However He answers what follows, and whatever becomes of the man at the top of the lane, the outcome is His.
- Verdict standing at my counter, you do not get a vote in what my hands do. Psalm 103 says He has not dealt with us after our sins, and He did that with the whole file open in front of Him. You can stay exactly where you are, and the bag is going by the door tonight.
- Fear that giving makes me a fool, you are not the one who taught me to pour. In the name of Jesus I take my hands back from you, because Scripture says Christ died for us while the question was still wide open, and nobody has ever called that foolish. What I am is a woman with a full kettle and an unfinished opinion, and only one of them is going out the door.
- Lord Jesus, You poured for me with every fact of me on the table and You did not revise one line of it first. I am not fixing anybody and I am not settling anything tonight. I am putting the thing in the bag, and Your Spirit is the one who took the scales out of my hands.
