Fourteen Voice Notes At Midnight

This message is for I answer every crisis message at any hour and I have somehow become the emergency service for a life that is not changing

One lamp is on in the living room and everything outside its circle has gone soft and brown. It is eleven fifty two. There is a mug on the side table with an inch of cold tea in it and a skin on top, and a book face down on the arm of the chair holding its own place since Sunday.

The phone lights up on the cushion. Face down, so the light comes up around the edges of it like something under a door.

She turns it over. A voice note. Four minutes and eleven seconds.

She listens to the whole thing with her hand over her mouth. Then there is another one, two minutes, then another, forty seconds, then one that is mostly breathing. By one forty in the morning there are fourteen of them, and she has listened to all fourteen, and she has typed and deleted and retyped four careful paragraphs about how loved she is and how this is not the end of anything.

She knows the arc by heart now. She could sing it. Two years of this. The same crisis wearing a different coat, the same three names, the same hour of the night, the same beautiful shattered person who is not sleeping and cannot stop talking and will be quiet for eleven days after this and then it will start again with a voice note at eleven fifty two.

And she stays up. Of course she stays up. She has stayed up for two years, and in the morning she is at work at eight with the same face on as everybody else, and nobody in that building has the faintest idea that she was a hospital last night.

She has not resented it once, not really. That is not the problem. The problem is quieter and worse than resentment. It is that somewhere in the last two years the shape of the thing changed. It stopped being a friend she is kind to and turned into a life she is somehow holding, and she cannot remember the day it changed, and she cannot see any door out of it that is not a door slamming.

So the lamp stays on. And the tea gets cold. And she types.

You have felt the weight land, and you know the exact hour it arrives. Somewhere along the way the kindness stopped ending. There is no edge on it anymore, no place where you set it down and it stays down, and the terrible arithmetic that runs in you at one in the morning is not about the other person at all. It is about whether you are still allowed to be tired.

He Said Easy, And He Was Not Being Poetic

You are not the one holding that life together. Matthew 11:28 was spoken over exactly this kind of tiredness long before phones existed, and the Spirit is not waiting on your permission to lift what you have been holding since Sunday.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.Matthew 11:28-30

Look at the invitation and then look at who it is addressed to. Not the lazy. Not the uncommitted. The laboring and the heavy laden, which is to say the ones already carrying something, already up late, already doing it. He comes for the ones who have been strong for two years, and He comes with a word about weight.

And He does not say put everything down. He says take mine, and then He tells you what His is like. Easy. Light. Those are the two adjectives He chose about His own assignment, and every honest person reading this knows that whatever has been sitting on their chest at one in the morning does not answer to either of them.

That is not a small observation. It is a way of telling which weight is yours. If what you are carrying is crushing you, that is information about the weight, not a report card on your love.

You have been carrying something that was never handed to you by Him. The Spirit knew that before you found it in a paragraph, and it is written into Matthew 11:30 in four words: my burden is light.

A Limit Is Not A Verdict

Here is the fear underneath, said out loud so it stops working in the dark. You believe that if you stop being available, you become a cruel person. That the moment you are less than infinitely reachable, everything you did for two years gets reclassified as a lie.

It does not. It never did.

Mercy is an act toward a need. It has hands, and hands have a size, and a size is not a failure. The Samaritan bandaged a man, put him on his own animal, paid the innkeeper and went on his journey. He went on his journey. He did not move in. He did not become the man's case worker, or his sponsor, or the guarantor of the rest of his life. And the story is told to us as the picture of mercy done right, with the leaving included, because the leaving was never the flaw in it.

You are being handed permission you did not know was available. That is Scripture, not sentiment, and His Spirit is what makes it move.

And hear this, because it matters more than anything else in this piece: no better effort on your part would have changed the outcome of somebody else's life. That is not cynicism. It is the plain limit of what a person is, and it is also the mercy of God, because if a life could be turned around by sheer devotion from a friend at midnight, then every unturned life would be somebody's fault, and you know exactly whose door that bill would arrive at.

You have been released from an accounting that was never yours to settle. You are not taking my word for it. His word puts the heavy laden at His own feet and says come, and the Spirit is what carries that off a page and into a house at one in the morning.

One plain thing before we go on. If what comes through at midnight is genuine danger, harm to a life, then that is not a weight for one friend in a lamplit room. Emergency services exist, crisis lines exist, and calling them is the merciful act, not a betrayal of anybody. Staying alone with danger has never been what mercy means, for them or for you.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is gentler than you are braced for.

The kindness stays. Nobody is taking your kindness away from you or asking you to become the sort of person who does not answer. Kindness is the part that is yours, and it is beautiful, and it has been real every single night for two years.

What lifts off is the outcome. You have been carried yourself, by a Man who called His own load light. He promised rest to the heavy laden, in His own words, and it is His Spirit who does the actual holding of what you have been trying to hold with two hands and a phone.

Feel the difference. One of those is an act. The other is a weight. You were built for the first and you have been quietly buckling under the second, and the buckling was never a sign that your love was thin. You are being lifted right now, in an ordinary room, by an easy yoke. It is written down, in Matthew 11:29, and the same Spirit who put it there is standing in your living room while the lamp is still on.

And on the days when there is nothing left in you at all, when you cannot answer anybody and cannot be anybody's anything, you are not accused. You have been received exactly as you are tonight, empty-handed. Scripture calls Him meek and lowly in heart, and His Spirit does not run a tally on a tired woman.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Phone on the arm of my chair, you are a phone, and the weight of a life was never inside you. Scripture puts the heavy laden at the feet of Jesus, and that is where this one goes. My hands are for kindness, and not for carrying.
  2. Verdict that a limit makes me cruel, get out of this house. In the name of Jesus I put you outside the door, and His word says the yoke of Jesus is easy and His burden is light. I am kind, my kindness has edges, and both of those are His.
  3. Lord Jesus, You called the heavy laden to Yourself and You never once asked me to be the room. Your word hands me an easy yoke and Your Spirit is holding the far end of it in this house tonight. The weight is Yours, the kindness is mine, and I am going to sleep.
