The alarm goes at six forty and Dale is awake before it, the way a man is when something has become a duty. Dark still. Frost on the windshield. He starts the truck from the kitchen window and lets it run while the coffee finishes, and he watches the light come on over Roy's porch across the road, which it does at six fifty-two, every day, like a signal.
Fourteen months ago Roy's car finally quit for good and Dale said what any decent man would say. I go right past there. Ride with me till you get sorted.
Till you get sorted.
That was fourteen months ago and Dale would still drive him. That is not the problem and he wants to be clear about that, even inside his own head at six forty in the morning. Twenty minutes each way. It costs him almost nothing. He likes Roy.
Here is the problem.
Somewhere in month four the ride stopped being the ride. Roy started asking Dale about the letter from the office. Then about whether he should take the earlier shift. Then whether Dale thought his sister was right about the thing with the apartment. Then, one Tuesday, whether Dale would mind swinging by the pharmacy on the way, which was fine, and then it was Thursdays too.
And now, this is the part Dale has not said to anybody, he lies awake at two in the morning running Roy's year. Whether the shift change goes through. Whether that interview happens. Whether Roy is going to be all right, in the large sense, in the long run. He checks the weather in the evening on Roy's behalf.
He did not agree to any of that. Nobody handed it to him. It arrived the way water arrives in a basement, without a moment you could point to.
And underneath it, low and constant, is a thing Dale would be ashamed to say out loud: some mornings he wishes the porch light would not come on.
Then he feels like a fraud for the whole rest of the day.
You know that driveway. Maybe yours is a phone that lights up and your stomach goes before you have read the message. Maybe it is a Saturday you have not had free in a year. You did one kind thing, one honest, ordinary, small kind thing, and the kind thing quietly turned into the management of somebody's entire life, and you cannot work out where you would even put the seam. And the tiredness is bad, but the thing that is actually eating you is that you have started resenting it, and you were not raised to be that kind of man.
The Ride Was Never The Whole Man
Let us start by saying what you did, accurately, because you have lost track of it.
You gave a man a ride. That is the whole of what you gave. It was good, it was real mercy, it met an actual need, and it has kept meeting one every working day for fourteen months, which is more faithfulness than most people manage at anything.
What you did not do, at any point, is take responsibility for how his life turns out. Nobody asked you to. You never agreed to it. And the reason it feels like you did is that mercy and rescue use the same hands, so it is genuinely hard to see where one stopped and the other started.
You are carrying a weight that was never handed to you by God or by anybody else. Mark 6:31 has Jesus looking at a crowd that had real needs, and real numbers, and no end to them, and saying to His men, come away by yourselves and rest a while; the Spirit who authored that sentence is not the one who has been waking a tired man at two in the morning to run somebody else's calendar.
Look hard at that scene, because we skip past it. The people were still coming. The need had not resolved. Nobody was fixed. And He said go and rest anyway.
And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.Mark 6:31
If limits were a failure of love, that verse could not exist. He would not have said it, and He certainly would not have said it while people were still walking up the beach.
You have permission that is older than your tiredness and it did not come from me. That is Scripture, not self care, and the Spirit is the one who makes a man able to hear it without flinching.
What Is Yours, And What Was Always His
Now let us do the harder half, which is the part at two in the morning.
You are not lying awake because you are generous. You are lying awake because somewhere in month four you took delivery of an outcome. Not a task, an outcome: whether Roy is going to be all right. And an outcome is not a thing a human being can carry, which is why it does not get lighter no matter how well you carry it.
You were never given the job of producing another man's future. No pep talk of mine could hand that back to you. It is written in 1 Corinthians 3:6 and 7 that one plants and another waters, and neither of them is anything, because God gives the growth, and the same Spirit who gives it has never once subcontracted the giving to a neighbor with a truck.
Read that verse again with your own name in it. Paul is not being modest. He is being accurate about the division of labor. You are the watering. You have never been the growth, and the growth is not lagging because you are not doing it well enough.
And this is where the guilt comes in, so let us kill it where it stands. You have begun to resent it. That does not make you a fraud, and it is not evidence that your kindness was fake all along.
You are being told the truth about your own limits by Someone who is not disappointed in you. Exodus 18:18 has an older man watching Moses do this exact thing and saying plainly, you will wear yourself out, this is too heavy, you are not able to do it alone; and the Spirit who put that conversation in the record put it there for men who are still doing it.
Notice what the older man did not say. He did not say Moses was a bad shepherd. He did not tell him to care less. He said the load was the wrong shape, and then he helped him change the shape of it.
You have not stopped loving him; you have simply been carrying two things and only one of them was yours. His word says to cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you, cast, an actual throwing motion done with the arms, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to let go of something at two in the morning without it feeling like abandonment.
Here is what I want to put in your hands before you go.
The reason this got so heavy is not that you gave too much. It is that at some point you started believing that if you set the thing down, it would hit the floor. That is the actual fear, and it has been running your sleep, and it has never once been said out loud in your house.
It is not true. And I do not mean that kindly, I mean it factually.
You were never the thing holding that man's life together. That is not me minimizing what you do; His word says the Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down, and the same Spirit who has been doing that work in your neighbor's life since long before his car quit is doing it this morning, in a truck, at seven, whether or not you are the one at the wheel.
Which means the twenty minutes get to be twenty minutes again. Not a stand in for an outcome. Not a payment against a debt you invented. Just a man driving another man to work, which is exactly what it was in the first week, before it grew a second job.
You are being handed back the actual size of your own kindness. Isaiah 40:11 has God tending His flock like a shepherd and gathering the lambs in His arms and gently leading, and gently is the word to sit with, because the Spirit who leads that gently is not the one who has been driving you.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking yourself into being less kind. Christ is in you, and the mercy you have been giving at seven every morning was given to you first and is still yours, and His Spirit is the one who makes Mark 6:31 stand up and walk rather than sit on a page. How that man's year turns out belongs to Him, and however He answers it, the drive is yours and it is honest work.
- Alarm set for six forty, you are a ride and you were never a contract. Jesus told His own men to come away and rest while the crowd was still coming, and He did not call that a failure of love. You are twenty minutes, and I am giving them gladly.
- Fear that he falls if I stop, you do not get to run my sleep at two in the morning. In the name of Jesus I hand that road back to the One who has been carrying it the whole time, because Scripture says one plants and one waters and God gives the growth. His life was never up on my shoulders, and it is not there now.
- Lord, You have never once asked me to be anybody's rescue, and Your Spirit has been holding that man's road since before his car quit. I am not responsible for how his year turns out and I am not pretending otherwise tonight. I am driving at seven, and that is the whole of what is mine.
