Kind Without FixingPsalm 55:22

The Message She Rewrites Eleven Times

This message is for A friend who spends an hour composing every message because somewhere underneath she believes the right arrangement of words would finally turn her friend's life around.

The tea went cold at some point and Cara has not noticed, which tells you roughly how long she has been sitting here. Ten past seven. Sun coming across the kitchen table in one long stripe. A slice of toast with a single bite out of it, going leathery on the plate.

She is on draft eleven.

She knows it is eleven because the notes app keeps them, stacked one under another like sediment. Draft one was two lines and warm. Draft four was long and had a question in it that she took out of draft five, because when she read it back in her own voice it landed like an accusation. Draft seven had a verse in it. Draft eight took the verse out. Draft nine put a different verse in. Draft ten was almost right, she thought, until she read it aloud in the empty kitchen and heard what happened to it on the word just, and she has now been circling the word just for eighteen minutes.

The message is for a friend whose life is coming apart in a slow, sideways, complicated way that Cara can see very clearly and cannot touch anywhere.

And here is what Cara believes, though she has never said it in these words, because said in these words it would sound unhinged. Somewhere in the English language there is an arrangement of about ninety words that would work. Not comfort. Work. A sentence that would go in like a key and turn, and something in her friend would click over, and the whole thing would begin moving in another direction. She has not found it yet. That, she is fairly sure, is the only reason it has not happened.

Which is why draft eleven matters this much. Which is why she is going to be late. Which is why the toast is leathery and the tea has a skin on it.

She puts the phone face down on the table. Twenty seconds later she picks it up again.

You know that table. You have your own version of it, and yours might not even be a message. It might be a conversation you rehearse in the shower with the water going cold. It might be a thing you have been holding for two years, polishing, waiting for the right weather to say it in. And underneath all that careful work there is a belief you have never once inspected, sitting there quietly running the entire operation, which is this: if you get it right, they change. And if they do not change, you did not get it right.

There Is No Key, And That Is Not Your Failure

Start with the belief, because everything else is downstream of it.

The belief is that another person's life has a lock on it, and that the lock has a combination, and that the combination is made of words, and that the words are your job. It is a very loving belief. It is also, if you turn it over and look at the back of it, an enormous claim. It says the hinge of somebody else's whole road is a paragraph, and that the paragraph is in your keeping, and therefore so is the road.

You are holding a friendship, not a case file. It is written down, in Psalm 55:22, and the same Spirit who put it there is at that table with you at ten past seven in the morning.

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

Read the verbs again, slowly, because the whole relief is in the grammar. There are only two actors. You cast. He sustains. There is no third position in that sentence for a person who casts the burden and then stands underneath it in case God's arms get tired.

And notice what you are told to do with the weight. Not manage it. Not distribute it thoughtfully. Not carry it well. Cast it, which is a word for what you do with a stone into water, an unbeautiful, whole-arm throw that ends with your hands empty and the thing gone from you.

You have been given words to give, and never a life to turn around. That is Scripture, not sympathy, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it hold when you are back at that table tomorrow morning.

Something in you is arguing already. It is saying that this sounds like giving up, and that a real friend keeps trying, and that the people who cast their burdens are the ones who stop caring. Hear that argument out and then look at what it is actually claiming. It claims that your friend is being held by your attention. That if you look away for a morning, something falls.

That is not devotion. It is a job description nobody gave you, and it is far too heavy for a human being, and you have been carrying it in a kitchen at seven in the morning with cold tea.

Where The Weight Actually Goes

Now the harder half, and I am going to say it plainly because the gentle version does not do the work.

Nothing you write turns anybody's life around. Nothing anyone writes does. The best sentence ever composed by a human being about somebody else's situation has, at its absolute maximum, the power to be heard, and to be true, and to sit there in a person's mind as company. That is not a small thing. It is enormous. It is simply not the same thing as a key.

You were never the hinge another person's road turns on. Psalm 55:22 already settled where the weight goes, and the Spirit is not standing over your shoulder asking you to draft something better than that.

Here is what that removes from you, and take it, because it is genuinely yours to take. It removes the eleventh draft. It removes the theory that draft twelve might have done it. It removes the private verdict you have been holding over yourself since the last time somebody you love went somewhere you could not follow, that with more skill, more patience, or a better arrangement of words, it might have gone differently.

You are being released from the eleventh draft. No wording of yours could do that. Scripture does, and His Spirit does.

And look at what it gives back. If the outcome is not yours, then the sentence does not have to be perfect. It only has to be true and kind and yours, which is a thing you can manage in about four minutes over cold tea. Ordinary friendship becomes available again the moment it stops being an intervention.

You have permission this morning to be an ordinary friend. The word says He sustains, and it is the Spirit of God, never the eleventh version of a paragraph, doing the sustaining while you go to work and forget to check your phone for two hours.

None of this is a rule about how much to care. Care as much as you like. Grief for somebody is not the same as responsibility for them, and the two have been sitting in one pile on your kitchen table for a long time. What we are doing here is separating the pile.

The breakthrough

So put draft eleven down, and put down the theory underneath it while you are at it.

You are being carried on the very morning you are trying to carry. The Spirit has been holding your friend on nights when you were asleep and not composing anything at all, and it is written into Psalm 55:22 in words a child could read out loud.

There is a particular exhaustion that comes from doing a job that does not exist. It has no natural end, no measurable progress and no day off, and it has been eating the first hour of your mornings. That job is now closed. Not your friendship. The job.

You have a limit, and your limit is not a failure of love. Nothing in Scripture puts another person's road on your shoulders, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting on you to find the right sentence before He begins.

And if this morning you have nothing at all to give, not a draft, not a word, not four minutes, then that is where you are and nobody here is writing it down against you. There is no quota. Mercy has a size and today the size is allowed to be nothing at all.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Draft eleven on my kitchen table, you are not a rescue and you never were. Psalm 55:22 puts the weight on the Lord, and my hands are open on this table.
  2. Fear that I am the reason nothing changed, you are off this table. Scripture hands the sustaining to God and never once handed it to me, and in the name of Jesus my friend is being carried in better arms than mine.
  3. Lord, You sustain what I cannot, and You have been holding her on nights when I was asleep. Your word says cast it on You, so it is cast, and my hands are empty on this table. I am writing one plain sentence this morning and then I am going to work.
