Softened AgainRomans 2:4

The Bench He Walks Past Now

This message is for A man who stopped at the same park bench every morning for two years, found out the whole story he had been told was invented, and now takes the long way around and calls it better for his knees.

Six twenty in the morning and the park is doing what it does at six twenty. Mist coming off the pond. The sprinklers going along the ball field in sequence, one head at a time. A jogger. Two crows arguing in the sycamore about something that matters a great deal to crows.

Walter comes in at the east gate the way he has for eleven years. But at the fork by the drinking fountain he goes right now, up the long side past the tennis courts, which adds nine minutes to the loop and takes him nowhere near the third bench.

The third bench is where Vernon sits.

For two years Walter stopped at that bench every morning. He brought a second cup in a thermos from home because Vernon liked it black and hot and Walter had the thermos anyway. They talked about the pond and the crows and eventually about Danny, Vernon's boy, stationed overseas. The letters. The tour that kept getting extended. The wedding Danny was going to have when he got back, in the fall, at the church on Ninth. Walter followed that story for two years the way a man follows a program he has come to care about. He worried about Danny. He prayed for Danny in the car.

Then in March the woman at the front desk of the rec center says it in passing, the way people say things that are only news to one person in the room. Oh, Vernon. He has been telling folks about that son since before I started here. There is no son.

Walter did not say anything to her. He finished the loop. He drove home and stood in his own kitchen for a while with the thermos still in his hand.

The next morning at the fork by the drinking fountain, he went right.

Nine extra minutes. He has done it every morning since March, and it is October now.

He would tell you it is the hills, if you asked. Better for the knees.

What actually happened is that something dried up. Not slammed shut, nothing so dramatic. Just dried, the way a hose left out through a whole summer goes stiff and will not coil. He is still a decent man. He still rolls the widow's cans back up her drive on Wednesdays. But there was a thing he used to do without thinking, a leaning toward people, and it does not lean any more, and lately he has caught himself being a little relieved about that.

You have a fork by a drinking fountain. Maybe yours is a phone that stays face down, or a hallway you cross before you have decided to cross it, or a name you scroll past twice a week. Somebody made a fool of you once, and you did not go bitter and you did not go cruel. You just went quiet. And the quiet has been so reasonable, and so easy to explain, that nobody has ever once asked you about it. Including you.

What Went Hard Was Not Your Character

First thing, and I am not moving off it. You were not wrong to protect yourself. Nobody in this message is going to tell you that you should have kept walking into it, or that a better man would have gone back to the bench in April with the thermos and said nothing. A man who has been made a fool of and puts up a hand is not a man who failed at love. He is a man who got hurt and did the one thing available to him at the time.

You are not under a single word of blame this morning. Romans 2:4 puts the whole mechanism the other way round from the way we assume it works, the kindness of God is what leads a man anywhere, not the scolding, and the Spirit who has walked all nine of those extra minutes beside you has never once used them to build a case.

But I do want to name what actually happened, because it is not what you think happened.

You did not become a hard man. Hardness is a character word and it is the wrong word for this. What took place is smaller and more mechanical than that. Something in you that used to move stopped moving, in one specific place, on one specific morning. And then, because that is how hearts work and how hoses work, the stopping spread out sideways into places that had nothing to do with Vernon at all.

Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?Romans 2:4

Look at what that verse is actually claiming. Not that kindness is pleasant. That kindness leads. It is the thing that moves a person who cannot be moved by argument, and God uses it on the hardest cases in the building, which is all of us, all the time, and it works.

You have been on the receiving end of that leading far longer than you know. That is Scripture talking and not sentiment, riches of kindness and forbearance and patience, three separate words reached for because one of them was not enough to carry it, and the Spirit has been running exactly that on you since long before a bench in a park came into anything.

What Dried, And Who Does The Softening

Here is the good part, and it is better than you are expecting, because it takes the whole job off you.

You are not being asked to soften yourself. You could not do it anyway. A man cannot decide to lean. He can decide to stand near somebody, and he can decide to do a small thing with his hands, but the leaning is not on the list of things a person can produce by deciding.

You are being softened by Somebody who is not asking you to go back to that bench. It is written in Ezekiel 36:26 that God takes out the heart of stone and puts in a heart of flesh, and the whole sentence is about who is doing the taking out, and His Spirit does that work in an ordinary man on an ordinary Wednesday, without a lecture, and without requiring him to walk into the same thing twice to prove he has recovered.

Hear that second half again, because it is where most people flinch. Nothing here is sending you back. The softening God does is not a test with a bench at the end of it.

You have a leaning in you that predates the injury and outlasts it. The Spirit put it there before anybody ever told you a story about a son, and Ezekiel 36:27 says so in as many words, I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My ways, which means the walking was never being generated by you in the first place and its absence is not a shortage in you.

And the pace of it is not yours to set either. This is not a thing you get done by Sunday.

You were never asked to produce the healing on a schedule. No effort of yours could manage it. Psalm 147:3 says He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, and binding is something done to a person while they sit still, and the Holy Spirit does that binding at a speed that is His and has never once been hurried by a man's impatience with himself.

The breakthrough

You have been managing this by explaining it. The hills are better for the knees. You are busy that day. It is a nicer walk anyway. Every explanation has been true, and not one of them has been the reason, and you have known that the entire time, which is its own quiet kind of tiredness.

You can put the explaining down. You do not have to justify the long way and you do not have to fix it either.

You are standing in front of a God who is not asking you for an account of the last seven months. Isaiah 42:3 has Him refusing to snap a bruised reed or blow out a wick that is barely burning, which is a picture of somebody handling damaged equipment with real care, and His Spirit has walked the long side with you every morning without one word of impatience about it.

And notice where the kindness came from in the first place. Not from your warmth. You had none to offer at the time.

You have been carried the whole way by a kindness that never once needed you to be soft first. No argument of mine gets a man there. His word says that while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly, and the same Spirit who applied that to you when you had nothing to bring is at work now in a man who is simply out of leaning.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself back into being a warm man. Christ is in you, and the leaning you think you lost was given to you on the day He was and has never been withdrawn, and His Spirit is the one who makes Romans 2:4 stand up and walk rather than sit on a page. What softens, and when, is not yours to schedule, and however He answers it, the sentence and the small thing are yours today and they are done.

  1. Nine extra minutes every morning, you are not evidence about the kind of man I am. Romans 2:4 says the kindness of God is what leads a man, and it has been walking the long way with me since March. You are only a path, and I am walking it with the water moving again.
  2. Verdict that I went hard, you do not get to sit in my chest and sound reasonable. In the name of Jesus I take my mornings back from you, because Scripture says God does not break a bruised reed and He has not broken this one. What dried in me is His to soften, and He started before I noticed.
  3. Lord, You were kind to me on every one of those nine minutes and never once mentioned them. Your Spirit is moving what went stiff in me, and I am not going back anywhere to prove I have recovered. I am saying the true sentence out loud today, and then I am doing one small kind thing before dark.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
