Softened AgainIsaiah 61:3

The Ladder He Keeps In The Shed

This message is for A man who gave his ladder, his van and every Saturday to a friend who wrecked all three, and who has quietly become somebody who never offers anything now, one reasonable no at a time.

The shed smells of two stroke and cut pine, the door is open to the yard, and at four in the afternoon in October the light comes in low along the bench and lies across everything Terry owns.

He is sharpening a chisel. He has been at it twenty minutes for a job that takes four, because the stone and the oil and the sound of it are the point.

On the wall behind him, on two black hooks he screwed in himself, hangs a ladder. Aluminum, three sections, wiped down. He oils the pivots every fall. It has not been off those hooks in six years.

A knock on the frame of the open door. A young guy from the bottom of the road, maybe twenty two, hands pulled up into his sleeves. Sorry to bother you. His mom's gutter has come away at the corner and the water is going down the wall and into the brick, and he has been up on a kitchen chair and it is nowhere near, and would Terry have a ladder he could borrow for an hour.

And Terry hears his own voice say: no, sorry. Haven't got one.

The kid says no worries, thanks anyway, and goes back down the road with his hands in his sleeves.

The ladder is eighteen inches behind Terry's right shoulder, in the light, where anybody standing in that doorway could see it.

He turns back to the chisel. He does not feel much of anything. That is the part he would tell you about, if he told anybody, which he does not. No rush of guilt. No argument in his head. The sentence came out the way a hinge swings, and it has come out before.

Six years ago it was a ladder, a van, and every Saturday from March to September. A man he had known since school, a house that needed doing, and Terry with tools and time and a wife who said go on then. The ladder came back bent at the stile. The van came back with the clutch gone and a smell in it that never came out. The Saturdays did not come back at all, and neither did the man, and there was one conversation on a driveway that Terry has never repeated to a living soul.

He did not decide anything after that. That is the thing he would want you to understand. There was no evening where he sat down and resolved to become careful. It went in the other direction, one small no at a time, each one so reasonable on its own that he could not now pick out the day it stopped being a choice and turned into a policy.

You know how that goes. Maybe yours was not a ladder. Maybe it was a spare room, a phone number, a truck, a skill everybody knew you had. Somebody used it up, and you did the sensible thing, and the sensible thing set like resin. And now there is something on a hook eighteen inches behind your shoulder, oiled and ready and never once offered, and you would rather not look straight at it in this light.

A hinge is not a character

Something has to be said before anything else is said, and it is this. Nobody is about to tell you off.

You are not going to be walked back through the driveway conversation. You are not going to be told that you should have seen it coming, or that a better man would have kept lending, or that the hardness in you is a sin you need to come clean about. Whoever taught you that this subject always ends with somebody in trouble taught you wrong.

You are a man whose oil ran out, and that is a different thing entirely from a man who went hard. Isaiah 61:3 names oil before it names one single thing about anybody's character, and the Spirit has never once confused a dry hinge with a bad one.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.Isaiah 61:3

Read what is being handed over there. Not a lecture. Not a plan. Oil, and a garment, and beauty, given to people standing in the ashes of something that actually burned. Nobody in that verse is asked to explain how the fire started.

And notice the order once more, because it is the same order the whole book keeps. The giving comes first. The mourning is named, not argued with. There is no clause in there where the mourner has to prove the fire was not his fault before the oil is poured.

You were right to stop, and nothing in this is going to tell you otherwise. Proverbs 22:3 says the prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself, and His Spirit has never argued with a man's own scars.

What happened to you was real. The van was real. The stile was bent. A person you had known since you were fifteen took what you had and put it back broken, and something in you closed, and closing was not a character flaw. It was a door doing what doors do when the wind gets in.

You have been carrying something that dried, not something that died. The Spirit knew that long before you did, and it is written into Isaiah 61:3 in plain words: oil for mourning, given, not earned.

What He asks you to hand over

Here is the only thing that verse asks of a man, and it is worth going slowly over, because most of us have been braced for something much harder.

He asks for the ashes.

Not the story straightened out. Not the account settled. Not a change of heart toward anybody, and not a verdict revised in either direction. Ashes are what is left of a thing that burned, and He asks for those, and He hands back beauty for them, and the trade is stated in that order and no other.

You are holding a pile of ashes He has already named as the trade. You do not have to take my word for that. His word puts beauty and ashes in the same short sentence on purpose, and the Spirit is what carries an exchange like that out of a scroll and into a shed at four in the afternoon.

There is a second thing in that verse that people read past, and it is the part that has your name on it. Trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord. Planted. Not grown by their own effort, and not up for reclassification because of what a season did to them.

You have been called a tree, planted, and a tree that stands bare in February has not been renamed. No encouragement of mine could hand you that. Isaiah 61:3 does, and His Spirit does.

Which changes what we are actually dealing with here. This is not a hard man who needs to become a soft one. This is a man with sap in him under bark that has gone quiet, and the whole question is not character at all. It is oil, and where the oil comes from, and it never once came from you in the first place.

You are being softened, and it is happening at the speed oil moves, not the speed a decision does. It is written down, in Isaiah 61:3, and the same Spirit who put it there is standing in a workshop doorway while you read this.

The breakthrough

So look at what is actually in front of you, because it is smaller than you have been treating it.

There is no repair job here. There is no confrontation, no reckoning, no conversation you have to have with anybody about anything that happened on a driveway. That is a different subject and it is not this one, and you do not have to touch it today to do what comes next.

You are free to be merciful with the question of fault still wide open. That is Scripture, not sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it move.

What is in front of you is an object on two hooks and a light coming in low along a bench. That is all. And the reason it matters so much more than its size is that the object is where the drying showed up. The no did not start in your character. It started in what you stopped doing with your hands, and your hands are exactly where it comes back.

You have not been asked to trust anybody, and nothing about tonight requires you to. His word does not tie mercy to a person's track record; it ties it to the God who gives oil to mourners, and the Spirit is at work in that distinction right now whether you feel a thing or not.

And if today is a day when you cannot even do that, hear this clearly. You are not in trouble. There is no bill here, and there never was. Mercy has a size and today the size is allowed to be nothing, and the oil is still His to pour on a man asleep in a chair.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the doorway if you are near one. What you are about to speak is yours because it was given to you in Christ long before any of it dried, and the authority in it is delegated, never worked up out of your own strength. Whether anything is ever borrowed back belongs to Him, and however He answers, the ladder still comes down.

  1. Two hooks on a shed wall, you are holding a ladder and not a verdict. Isaiah 61:3 says He gives the oil of joy for mourning, and oil is what a hinge needs long before anybody calls it stiff. In the name of Jesus, that ladder comes down off you tonight.
  2. Suspicion that I have gone mean, you do not get the last word in this shed. His word calls me a tree of righteousness, planted, and a tree standing bare in February has not been renamed by anybody. I am a generous man, and there is an aluminum ladder in the light saying so.
  3. Lord, You handed out beauty for ashes and You never asked one mourner to explain the fire first. Your Spirit is loosening what dried in me while I stand here with sawdust on my sleeve. Your word says You give a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, and I am carrying it out into the yard.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
