Twenty to eleven, and the kitchen is down to one lamp and the hum off the refrigerator. Marcia has a cold cup of tea she is not going to finish and a crossword she has not written in since the third clue.
The phone is on the table beside the salt, face down.
It buzzes. Once, then again. The tabletop carries it up through her forearm.
She does not turn it over. She sits with her hand flat where it is and she counts. Two buzzes is a message. Four or five would be a call. Two is a message and a message can wait until morning, and she says that to herself in a voice so reasonable it could be reading out a schedule.
There was a time this woman slept with the ringer on. Not a figure of speech. On the nightstand, charging, volume up, because somebody might need her at three, and somebody often did. She has driven strangers to the clinic. She has kept a spare key on her ring for a household she was not related to. She made up the sofa bed eleven times in one winter and learned to make the one soup that would get eaten.
Three years of it went to one person. She will not use the name, not even in her own kitchen. Grocery runs. A ride at six in the morning. Sitting in a parking lot for two hours reading a magazine she had already read, so as not to be inside and so as not to be far. She was proud of it. That is the part she cannot get past, that she was proud of it.
Then one August the number stopped working. No fight. No goodbye. No note through the door. Just a silence that kept on being silence until it became a fact about her life.
She was fine. She told everybody she was fine and it was mostly true. She kept going to things. She kept smiling at the front desk. And somewhere in that first fall the phone came off the nightstand and started charging in the hall, and then it started lying face down on the table, and nobody has ever once asked her why, and she has never once told anybody, because the answer is embarrassing and small: she cannot make herself turn it over.
It buzzes again. The refrigerator cuts out and the room gets very quiet.
You know this table. Yours might have a different object on it. A door you stopped answering. A group message you left. A street you drive the long way round now. And you have been told, probably by somebody with a warm face, that you have gone hard, and you nodded, and you went home and thought about it in the car.
I am not here to agree with them.
Nobody Is Taking The Latch Off Your Door
Let us settle the ground first, because you have been braced for a telling off since the first paragraph and you cannot hear anything while you are braced.
You were not wrong to protect yourself. Put that down where you can see it. A person who has been drained does what a drained person does, and there is no verse anywhere that calls it wickedness. What happened to you was real. Three years of grocery runs and parking lots is not nothing, and a silence at the end of it is a wound, whatever anybody has decided about who owes what.
You were guarded by God through the whole season you spent guarding yourself. Psalm 121 gives us a Keeper who does not slumber, and His Spirit kept that watch over you through every month the ringer stayed switched off.
And that is not what this is about. We are not going anywhere near the question of what that person deserves, or what you owe them, or whether the account is settled. That belongs to a different conversation than this one and I am leaving it alone entirely.
This is about something quieter. It is about what dried up.
You have a wound, not a character flaw, and God has never confused the two. No sentence of mine could settle that for you. Psalm 147:3 does, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a settled sentence like that reach a kitchen at twenty to eleven.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.Psalm 147:3
Look at the verb He chose. Bind. That is a bandage word. It is what you do to something torn, with your hands, close up, taking your time. It is not the word you use for a lecture and it is not the word you use for a repair job on somebody's personality. He is not fixing your attitude toward giving. He is dressing an injury.
You have been treated gently by God in the exact months everybody else was assessing you. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed He will not break and smoking flax He will not quench, and the Spirit has been doing that carefully around you since the August the phone went silent.
What Went Hard In You Is Not Who You Are
Here is the difference, and it is the whole hinge of this.
A hard person is somebody who has decided that other people do not matter. That is not you and you know it is not you, which is precisely why the accusation stings. What is actually true is much more ordinary. Something in you that used to move, moves slower. The buzz used to make you stand up. Now it makes you count.
That is not the death of your compassion. That is a hand that got burned, pulling back from the stove. It is the most natural motion a body makes.
You are being carried by God through a season your own strength could not hold up. Galatians 6:9 speaks straight to the one who has grown weary in doing good, and His Spirit does not read weariness as rebellion.
And notice what the verse does not do. It does not ask you to work up a feeling. Nowhere in this is God waiting for you to become warm again before He does anything. That would be putting the whole weight on the wounded one, which is exactly the thing He never does.
You are already being softened, and it started before you agreed to it. The Spirit began that work quietly, and it is written down in Philippians 1:6, that the One who began a good work is the One who carries it on.
So there is nothing here for you to manufacture. The softening is not a mood you have to reach. It is a thing being done to you, at the rate a bandage goes on, and your part is smaller than you were afraid it would be.
So here is what I want to say to you, at your table, tonight, with the lamp on.
You are not the fool of that story. No opinion of mine has any weight against what you are carrying, but Scripture does, and the Spirit does: the word says love bears and endures, and the three years you gave were not filed under waste by any accounting God keeps.
That silence did something to you. It is allowed to have done something to you. What it did not do is change what God has said about you, and it did not put you outside anything.
You have been near to Him in the exact spot you assumed you had drifted. Psalm 34:18 has Him close to the brokenhearted and saving those crushed in spirit, and His Spirit has been in that kitchen every evening you sat there counting buzzes.
And now the small thing. Because mercy at this point in your life is not going to arrive as a grand return to who you were at forty. That woman did not have this wound and you do. What comes back comes back the size of a bike chain.
You are free to be kind again in a way that costs you almost nothing. He promised a heart of flesh in place of a heart of stone, and the same Spirit who makes that exchange has no interest at all in charging you for it. Small is not a concession He is making to your weakness. Small is what mercy actually looks like on most days, in most kitchens, for most people.
Declare this over yourself
- Phone lying face down on my table, you are not my heart. Scripture says He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds, and He has never once needed me to be brave first. I am turning you over tonight.
- Verdict that I am a fool for helping, you have no standing at this table. Scripture says love bears all things and endures all things, and the Holy Spirit has never once filed those three years under waste. I am leaving the porch light on.
- Lord, You are the One who binds up wounds, and Your word says You heal the broken in heart without asking them to be warm first. In the name of Jesus I am receiving the softening You began in me without my permission. I am opening my hands at this table.
