Kind Without FixingIsaiah 46:4

Paddling For Two

This message is for The woman who has been doing her brother's share of the care for their mother, and who has started believing that if she stops for one day, everything ends.

The canoe is built for two, and Terri is in the stern, which means every third stroke is a correction.

Out here at this hour the water goes the color of a struck match and the far shore turns into one flat line of black. There is maybe thirty five minutes of light left. A heron lifts off the shallows on the left and complains about it the whole way.

Stroke, stroke, correction. Stroke, stroke, correction.

She knows how to do this. She has done it since she was nine years old. But a boat this length wants weight in the bow, and with the bow empty the nose rides high and the wind takes it, and so every third stroke of hers is not travel. Every third stroke is just undoing what the wind did while she was busy going forward.

She left her mother's house at six twenty. The pills are sorted into the little box with the days on the lid. The grab rail beside the tub is finally in, because Terri drilled it herself on a Saturday after the handyman stopped answering. The laundry is in the dryer and she will go back and take it out at nine because her mother cannot reach the drum anymore. There is a form on the counter that needs a signature and a date and she has read the first line of it four times this week.

Her brother Wade lives two hours up the interstate. He calls on Sundays. He asks how Mom is doing and he means it, and when she says fine he says good, good, and tells her about the truck.

She is not angry at him tonight. That would take energy she does not have. She is tired in the way that sleep does not reach, the tired that lives about an inch behind the eyes and does not care what time you went to bed.

And somewhere in the last year, without ever once deciding it, she started believing something. Not out loud. Never out loud. She started believing that she is the reason it all still stands up. That the pills, the rail, the dryer, the form, her mother's whole remaining life, are balanced on her, and that if she puts the paddle across her knees for one single day, the entire thing comes down.

The light goes. The heron is long gone. Terri lets the canoe drift and it swings slowly sideways to the wind, the way an empty bow always does, and she sits there in the stern of a boat built for two.

You have been in that seat. Maybe it is not a mother. Maybe it is a father, or a grown child, or a friend nobody else calls anymore. There is a load in your life that was quietly redistributed until most of it sat on you, and you never signed anything, and you cannot remember the day it happened. And underneath the exhaustion there is a belief you would be embarrassed to say in front of anybody: that you are the thing holding it together, and that the moment you rest, it ends.

Every Third Stroke Is A Correction

Let me put something down in front of you before we go one line further, because everything after it depends on it.

You are carrying something today that was never weighed out and handed to you by God. Isaiah 46:4 already settled who does the carrying in this world and it is not the woman in the stern, and the Spirit is not asking you to volunteer for a post that was filled before you were born.

That does not mean the pills do not need sorting. Somebody has to sort them and tonight that somebody is you, and it is good and right and merciful that you do it. Mercy is an action toward a real need, and yours has a days-of-the-week lid on it.

But there is a difference between doing the next necessary thing and becoming the foundation, and that difference is the whole message.

You have been faithful, and faithful is not another word for limitless. The Spirit put that distinction into Scripture long before it showed up in your kitchen, and it is written into Exodus 18:18 in words nobody softened: the thing is too heavy for you, you are not able to perform it by yourself alone.

Read who says that and to whom. A father in law says it to Moses, the man who spoke with God face to face like a friend, while Moses is sitting from morning to evening judging a nation because nobody else was doing it. Nobody in that scene calls him lazy. Nobody suggests more devotion. The correction is not aimed at his heart, it is aimed at his arithmetic.

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.Isaiah 46:4

You were never told that mercy means becoming the reason somebody else's life holds together. You are not taking my word for that. His word says the Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down, Psalm 145:14, and the Spirit is what carries a line like that off a page and into a room with a pill box on the counter.

The One Doing The Carrying Is Not You

Count the verbs in that verse. I have made. I will carry. I will sustain. I will rescue. Four, and every one of them has God as the subject, and not one of them is delegated to a daughter with a drill and a Saturday.

You are being handed a limit, and a limit is not a failure of love. No sentence of mine could make that safe to believe. Scripture does, and His Spirit does, because the man who spoke with God as a friend was told out loud that a load was too heavy for him and nobody in the account called that a lack of devotion.

This is where the category matters. There is a way of helping that quietly turns into case work: you start with a need in front of you and you finish with a person on your back and an outcome you are now responsible for producing. The need was real. The mercy was real. Somewhere along the way the shape changed, and nobody announced it.

You have been merciful this entire time, and mercy was never measured by how it turned out. It is written down, in Micah 6:8, that what is required is to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God, and the same Spirit who chose the word walk knows exactly the difference between a walk and a six year sprint.

And now the part about your brother, which is one sentence long and then we move on: he is not this article's business, and neither is the verdict on him. Whether he should call more than Sundays is not something you have to settle tonight, and you are not required to reach a conclusion about a man in order to put a paddle across your knees. The load and the man are two separate subjects. Only one of them is in your boat.

You are standing in a boat that has never once been yours to keep afloat. Isaiah 46:4 puts four verbs on God, I have made, I will bear, I will carry, I will deliver, and His Spirit does not subcontract any one of them to a tired woman on a lake at dusk.

The breakthrough

So here is what is being handed to you, and it is not a technique and it is not a schedule.

You are being carried right now by the very arms you have been trying to be. He promised it in Isaiah 46:4 in the past tense and the future tense in one breath, I have made and I will carry, and the Spirit does not wait until your own hair goes gray to start.

The thing you believe would collapse is not standing on you. It never was. It has been standing on Him this entire time, and you have been standing on Him too, which is why you are still upright after a year that should have finished you.

You have been genuinely holding a great deal, and you have never once been the thing your mother's life is balanced on. That is Scripture and not comfort talk, and His Spirit is what makes it settle somewhere below the ribs where the tired lives.

Nobody here is telling you to stop caring for her. That would be a different article on a different site and it would be a lie. What is being lifted off you tonight is not the work. It is the weight of the world's outcome, which was never assigned to you and which you picked up in the dark without noticing.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, out at the water if that is where you are. The authority is not yours by grit and it is not mine to lend you. It is Christ's, and in Him it has been given to you to speak what He has already settled. What He does with the load after that is His to decide, and however He answers, what you spoke stands.

  1. Canoe built for two, you are not proof of anything about me. The Word says God Himself is the one who made and the one who carries, so the empty seat is His arithmetic and not mine. Tonight I paddle the water in front of me and nothing further.
  2. Fear that everything ends if I stop, get out of this boat. Jesus slept through a storm with the water coming over the side and no one called that carelessness, and I am His. In the name of Jesus, the paddle goes across my knees and my hands come open.
  3. Lord, You have been carrying her since before I had hands to help with, and You are carrying her tonight while I sit here on the sand. Your word says You made and You bear, and Your Spirit does not hand that job to me. I am writing down this week's worth and laying my palms flat on top of it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
