The Truck He Keeps Fixing

Late afternoon, and the sun is coming through the gaps in the barn boards in flat gold bars, so the dust hangs in them and turns over slowly. The radio is on low. Marv is under the front of Corey's truck with the trouble light hooked over the fender and a water pump in two pieces on a rag beside his knee.

He knows this engine better than he knows his own. Fifth time in fourteen months. The alternator in the spring. The exhaust the summer before that. The starter twice, which should not happen, and did.

Corey drops it off on a Sunday evening and picks it up on a Wednesday and says thanks, Marv, you are a lifesaver, and means it. He is not a bad man. Marv would put a fist through the wall of the feed store if he heard anybody say Corey was a bad man. He is Lorna's brother and he has been coming up this lane since he was eleven years old, and there is a photograph in the house of the two of them on the tailgate with a watermelon.

Marv gets the pump seated. Wipes his hands. And then he does the thing he has started doing, which is the actual reason he cannot sleep.

He stands there in the barn door with the light going orange over the field and thinks about where that truck goes on Thursday.

That is new. It was not like this for the first three or four repairs. For the first three or four he just fixed the thing, handed the keys back, and went in for his supper without a thought in his head. Somewhere in the last year a second job appeared that nobody gave him and nobody named, and now he lies awake running it: whether it helped, whether it did any good, whether he is holding something up that should have been allowed to fall, whether every bolt he has turned out here has quietly become his responsibility once it is out on the county road.

He fixed a water pump. He is carrying a life.

You know this. It is not a truck in your case, most likely. It is a spare room, or the number that comes up on your phone at ten at night, or the same conversation you have been having for four years in the same kitchen. And you did not sign up for the weight, you signed up for the favor. And somewhere along the way the favor stopped ending when the job ended, and you have started to feel like the outcome of somebody else's whole life is sitting on your workbench, and you cannot say when that started or how to hand it back.

You Fixed A Truck, Not A Man

Let me put the two things beside each other, because they have been sitting on the same bench for a year and they were never the same thing.

The first is a water pump. That is a job. It has a start and a finish, it took an afternoon and a set of knuckles, and when the engine turned over it was done. Nobody is confused about that job.

The second is an outcome. Where the truck goes. What Corey does. How the next five years turn out for a man you have known since he was eleven. That one has no start and no finish and no set of knuckles that could ever complete it, and you have been working on it since about last March, unpaid, at night, in your head.

You have already done the merciful thing, and it was finished when the engine turned over. Galatians 6:10 already named the whole of the assignment, to do good to all as we have opportunity, and the Spirit is not asking you to invent a bigger one this afternoon.

Mercy is a need met. That is the definition and it has never been more than that. The Samaritan on that road put a man on his own animal, took him somewhere warm, saw him settled, and left. He left. He got on with his week. He does not appear in the story again, and the story does not tell us one thing about how the man turned out, because how the man turned out was never what the story was measuring.

You were never given the second job you have been working. That is Scripture, not sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it move: the Lord Himself is named as the keeper of a man, and He has not resigned that post and He is not looking for help with it.

Here is the part that will surprise you. The second job is not more loving than the first. It feels more loving. It costs more, it hurts more, it keeps you up, and everything in us says that what costs more must be worth more. But an outcome you cannot produce is not a gift you can give. It is a weight you can carry, and there is a difference, and the difference is that one of them reaches somebody and the other one only reaches you.

You are holding a wrench, and a wrench has never once been able to hold a life. You are not taking my word for that. His word says it is God who gives the increase while men do the planting and the watering, and the Spirit is what carries a sentence like that off a page and out onto a barn floor at five in the afternoon.

To His Own Master He Stands

Now the verse, and I want you to hear who it takes the weight off.

Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.Romans 14:4

Read the last line twice. Most people quote the first half of that verse as a rebuke and stop before the good part. The sentence does not end with a warning. It ends with a hand under somebody.

You are standing in front of a man who already has a Master, and it is not you. It is written down, in Romans 14:4, that to his own master he stands or falls, and the same Spirit who put that line into a letter about people arguing over dinner is out in your barn this evening with the trouble light still burning.

Notice what that does to the tally you have been keeping. If Corey is upheld, it is not because Marv got the pump seated right. And if Corey is not upheld, it is not because Marv did the job on a Tuesday when he was tired. Neither one of those was ever within a hundred miles of Marv's hands. You have been carrying a verdict that was never yours to reach. No wrench of mine could pry that off you. Scripture does, where it says God is able to make him stand, and His Spirit does the lifting.

And hear this too, because the other half of the trap is the guilt on the days you say no.

A limit is not a lapse. A man with two hands, a back that is fifty six years old and a field of his own has a limit, and that limit is a fact about a body, not a report on a heart. You are free to have a limit, and the limit is not a failure of love. The Spirit set that in you long before you admitted it to anybody, and Exodus 18:18 says it in plain words: the thing is too heavy for you, and you are not able to perform it alone.

So the next time the truck comes up the lane, you get to do the job, or you get to say not this week, and neither one of those answers is a verdict on the man and neither one decides how his life turns out. That was never on your workbench. It was never on it for a single day.
