The hall is going. Tables pushed back to the walls, the good lights on, somebody's tia already dancing with a folding chair because her husband will not get up.
Rafa is at the back, near the stacked tables, in a chair he did not choose so much as arrive in.
He knows this room like his own hands. He knows which door sticks. He knows that if you put the speaker where they have put the speaker, the low end disappears behind the pillar and the people at the far end hear about half of it, and he knows that nobody in the world will notice that except him.
He built this. Eleven years of it. The anniversaries, the send-offs, the December thing, the two funerals where somebody had to hold the room steady and he did. When it went well nobody thought about him at all, which is exactly what it means for it to go well, and he never once minded.
Tonight there is a kid on the piano counting the band in. He is doing it fine. He is doing it well, actually, and the room is up on its feet, and the trumpet comes in a beat late in the same place it always does and nobody cares because it is a party and the point of a party is not precision.
And Rafa sits at the back with a plate he has not touched and finds that he has nothing.
Not sadness exactly. Not envy either. Just nothing, the way a tap has nothing after the tank has run down: no pressure, no complaint, nothing coming through. Somebody's little cousin comes over and asks him something and he hears himself give an answer that is warm and correct and completely empty, and she goes off happy, and he sits back down.
He has been in this hall a thousand times. He has never once been at the back of it.
The chorus comes around. Forty people sing it back at the band. And a sentence arrives in Rafa quietly, without any drama at all, and it is this: they do not need me, and I do not have anything, and I do not know what I am when I am not the one carrying it.
You know that chair. It might be a hall, or a kitchen at the end of a bad month, or a car in a parking lot before you go in. You have been the one who shows up. You have carried other people through their worst weeks with a steady hand. And tonight you are the one in trouble, and there is nothing in your hands, and the honest sentence in you is the one nobody expects to hear from someone like you.
The Nearness Is Not A Reward
I want to take a verse people quote at funerals and put it in a hall with a band in it, because that is where it is actually doing its work tonight.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18
Look at where the nearness comes from in that sentence. It is not summoned. Nobody in that verse does anything to obtain it. There is a condition named, and the condition is being broken, and the nearness arrives on that condition alone.
You are being drawn near to by God tonight at exactly the point where you have nothing. That is Scripture and not comfort talk, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it land.
Which means the emptiness in you at the back of that room is not a disqualification from anything. Everybody has this backward, especially the people who carry things for others. We assume nearness runs on capacity: God is close when we are strong, and when the tank runs down He is politely somewhere else waiting for us to sort ourselves out.
That is not what is written. The verse names the crushed and it names the brokenhearted and it puts God right beside them. If anything, the tank running down moved you toward the middle of that sentence rather than out of it.
You have been found by the One who comes close to the crushed, and He never once asked what you brought. It is written, in that same line, that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit, and the same Spirit who put those words down is in that hall while the band plays.
Nobody Is Resting You For Anything
Now I have to say something plainly, because the version of this that gets preached to men like Rafa is a lie with a kind face.
People say that a man needs to rest so that he can serve again. That God is refilling you for the next season. That this is a pit stop and you are being seen to so you can get back out there.
Not here. Not on this page.
You were loved before you were ever useful, and that order has never once reversed. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still helpless, and the Spirit is not standing over your chair waiting for you to be back on your feet.
If the only reason God is kind to a tired man is to get more work out of him, then He is not a father, He is a foreman, and the whole thing collapses into a transaction with nicer words. The nearness in Psalm 34 has no purpose clause. It does not say near to the brokenhearted so that they may return to their duties. It stops at near.
You are being held tonight, and there is no invoice attached to the holding. You do not have to take that from me. His word says He gives to His beloved even in their sleep, and the Spirit has never once required a man to earn a night off.
Sleep. The one activity in which you are producing absolutely nothing for anybody. That is the picture Scripture reaches for.
You have been counting everybody else in for eleven years, and God has never graded you on the count. The Spirit knew what this week cost you long before anybody in the hall noticed the chair by the stacked tables, and it is written into Isaiah 42:3 that a bruised reed He does not break.
And one more thing, said gently and meant completely. If what you are carrying tonight is heavier than tiredness, if the sentence in you has gone past I have nothing and reached I do not want to be here, then please tell a living person tonight. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or a crisis line. Say it out loud to somebody with a face. That is not weakness and it is not the end of anything. It is the most merciful thing available in the room, and mercy toward yourself has always counted.
Something can be received here, in the chair you are actually in.
You are being met and not managed, and there is nothing you have to produce before morning. He promised to be near the brokenhearted, and Psalm 34:18 puts the nearness entirely on His side of the sentence, with His Spirit carrying it into a folding chair at the back of a loud room.
Notice what is not being asked of you tonight. You are not being asked to give anybody anything. You are not being asked to lead, hold, steady, arrange or carry. You are not being asked to feel grateful, or to find the lesson, or to be encouraged on cue.
You have not been quietly written off by a God who only wanted the useful part of you. Matthew 12:20 says He does not snuff out a smoldering wick; the Spirit tends what is barely lit and has never thrown out a single one.
The band is fine. The kid on the piano is fine. The room does not need you tonight, and that is not the tragedy it felt like at seven o'clock, because you were never the reason it worked, and being needed was never the reason you were loved.
Declare this over yourself
You are not talking yourself into feeling better. Christ is in you, and the nearness in Psalm 34:18 is His to give and not yours to earn, and His Spirit is the one making that verse live instead of sit on a page. What tomorrow asks of you is not yours to settle tonight, and however He answers it, the God who is near the brokenhearted is near you.
- Back row of that hall, you are not a demotion and you are not a punishment. Scripture says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit, and that puts Him at the back of the room tonight and not at the front. I am sitting here with my hands open.
- Lie that I am only the man who runs it, you do not get to tell me what I am. In the name of Jesus I put you out of this hall, because the word says God loved us while we were still helpless, and helpless is a long way from useful. What I am is loved, and I was loved before I was ever the one carrying it.
- Lord, You come near the crushed without being sent for, and Your Spirit is nearer to this chair than the music is. I am not leading anything tonight and I am not producing anything by morning. I am sitting here with nothing, and You are near.
