The Meal Somebody Else Made

The bell goes at ten past six and by the time Ross gets to the door there is nobody there, only a car pulling away at the end of the street and a covered dish sitting on his own top step with a strip of masking tape across the lid.

Chicken and rice. Reheat 350, twenty minutes, foil on.

Ross knows that handwriting. He also knows that dish, because he is the one who bought the second set of them, eleven years ago, when the first set started disappearing into people's cupboards and never came home.

He runs the meal schedule at his church. Fourteen years. He knows which families keep it dairy free and which street is impossible to park on and who leaves the porch light on and who will not answer the door but wants the food anyway. He has carried that cooler up more steps than he could count. He is the man who calls at nine on a Sunday night and says, listen, do not worry about Tuesday, Tuesday is handled.

This week his own house is the house on the list. Marilyn came off the bottom stair on Thursday and is still in with the hip, and their daughter drove in from three states away, and the kitchen is exactly as it was on Thursday morning because nobody in it has thought about a kitchen since.

So there is a dish on the step. Still warm on the bottom. Somebody did the thing he has done a hundred times, and did it well, and did it quietly, and did not stand there waiting to be thanked.

And Ross cannot pick it up.

He stands in his own doorway with the hall light behind him and his hand at his side and he does not bend down.

He would not be able to tell you why. If you pushed him he would say something about not wanting to put anybody out, and that would be true and it would not be the reason. The reason is lower down and does not have words yet, and it goes something like this: I am the one who carries. If I am the one who is carried, I do not know what I am.

He picks it up eventually. Of course he does. But he stands there a long time first, in a doorway he has stood in for twenty-six years, looking at a warm pan on his own step like it was something he did not have the standing to touch.

You know that doorstep. Maybe you are the one who always drives. The one who checks in. The one everybody texts on a Sunday night. And this week it turned around, and something you cannot name is standing between you and the plain fact that somebody wants to be good to you and there is nothing for you to do about it.

The Name He Gave Himself

Start where the passage starts, because it starts with a name.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Father of mercies. God of all comfort. Those are not compliments somebody paid Him. That is how He is introduced, in that order, before a single thing is asked of anybody.

And notice which side of the exchange you are on in that sentence. You are not the comforter there. You are the one being comforted. The whole passage opens with God doing something toward a person who is in trouble, and the person is not doing anything at all except being in it.

You are on the receiving side of that verse this week and you are not out of position. 2 Corinthians 1:3 names Him the Father of mercies before it names anybody's usefulness, and the Spirit who carried that sentence to Paul in the middle of an affliction he could not fix is the one standing in a doorway with you tonight.

Stay here a minute, because men like Ross skip this part at speed. Fourteen years of running the schedule quietly teaches a man that he is the kind of person who is on the giving end. That becomes an identity. And then a dish turns up on his own step and the identity has no instructions for it.

You have never been the reason anybody at that church got fed. That is not a demotion; His word says every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, so the food was always coming down and you were the last few feet of the journey, and the same Spirit who moved you up all those steps moved somebody else up yours on Thursday.

The Part Of The Verse That Is Not A Bill

Now the sentence you are bracing for, because I know you read it and I know what it did to you.

So that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction.

Every person who has ever been the one carrying the cooler hears that clause as an invoice. Right, so this is a resupply. God is filling the tank so the truck can go back out. I get to sit down for a week and then I owe Him a better year.

That is not what it says and it is not what He is like.

Read the grammar. Paul is describing what overflowed out of his own life, in the past, looking back. He is not writing terms and conditions and handing them to a man on a doorstep. The comfort was real and complete on the day it arrived, and what later came of it was God's arithmetic and never a condition placed on the comfort itself.

You are not being resupplied and you are not being invoiced. No pastor's reassurance can settle that; it is written into the name itself, the Father of mercies, and a father who feeds a son on the understanding that the son will be more useful afterward is not the father in that sentence, and the Holy Spirit has never once delivered comfort with a due date attached.

Look at how He does this when He does it plainly. A man lies down under a broom tree, done, finished, asking to be taken. An angel comes and touches him and there is bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water at his head. He eats and lies down again. And the angel comes back and does it a second time, and the entire content of both visits is arise and eat.

Not one word about the ministry. Not a plan, not a rebuke, not a schedule. Food, water, sleep, and then more food, and only much later, days later, a conversation.

You have been handed the same order of operations and you did not have to ask for it. 1 Kings 19:5 and 6 puts the eating first and the calling much further down the page, and the Spirit who fed that man twice before saying anything is not standing in your kitchen tonight with an agenda.

And hear the size of what is being said to you. Not: rest, so that. Just rest. You are allowed to be the one in trouble for as long as this takes. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit, near being a word about proximity rather than a word about progress, and the same Spirit who is that near is not measuring the week.
