Held When Empty1 Kings 19:5-7

The Fire She Did Not Light

This message is for I have kept everybody in this valley warm for twenty years and tonight I am sitting in my own cold room in my coat because I do not have it in me to lay a fire.

There is a basket of kindling by the hearth and it is full, and there is a box of matches on the shelf about six feet from where Nell is sitting, and yesterday's ash is still in the grate.

She has been in the chair since a little after three.

The light has moved. When she sat down it was up along the top of the wall, warm on the picture rail. Now it is halfway down and gone orange and it will be off the wall entirely in about twenty minutes, and she has watched the whole of that happen and it has not occurred to her to get up.

She has her coat on. She put it on at half past two instead of laying the fire, because the coat was nearer.

Nell has laid ten thousand fires. She could do this one with her eyes shut. She is the woman in this valley who turns up. Twenty years of casseroles carried up paths in the dark, of school runs done for other people's children, of sitting the night with somebody's mother so that somebody could sleep, of being the one you call. There is a whole road out there that has been kept warm by this woman, and she has never once made a thing of it.

At four o'clock somebody knocked.

She heard it. She knew who it was by the knock, because you do after twenty years. And she sat in the chair with her coat on and did not move, and the knock came again, and then the gate, and then nothing.

And that is the part that frightened her. Not the tiredness. She has been tired before and tiredness passes and she knows the shape of it. What frightened her was that she did not feel guilty. She sat there and listened to somebody she loves walk back down her own path, and there was nothing in her at all. No shame, no wince, no reaching. Just the light coming down the wall.

She has a thought she has not said out loud, and she is not going to, and it is this: if the whole of what I am is a woman who turns up, and I cannot turn up, then what is left sitting in this chair.

The room is genuinely cold now. Her hands are cold. The kindling is dry and ready and eighteen inches from her foot.

You know that chair. Maybe yours is the side of the bed at eleven in the morning, or the car in the driveway with the engine off, or the kitchen you are standing in right now with the light off because putting it on would be a decision. You have kept a great many people warm. You have nothing today. And somewhere in the last hour you began to suspect that the nothing is not a season but a verdict, and that it is about you.

He Did Not Ask Elijah A Single Question

There is a man in the book of Kings who is lying under a bush in a desert wanting to be dead.

He is not a beginner and he is not weak. He is the one who had just stood alone in front of a whole nation and called down fire, and days later he is flat on the ground in the wilderness asking God to take his life, because he has run out and running out does not care what you did on Tuesday.

Now watch what heaven does about it, because it is not what anybody would write.

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.1 Kings 19:5-7

No sermon. No question. Not one word about the state of his faith, the quality of his ministry, or how a man who called down fire on Carmel ends up face down under a bush. He is touched, fed, and allowed to go back to sleep. Then he is fed again.

You are being met, and nothing whatever is being required of you first. 1 Kings 19:5 already showed what He does with somebody who has nothing to bring, and the Spirit is not asking you to improve on the arrangement this evening.

And read that last line again, because it is the tenderest line in the passage and it gets skipped. Because the journey is too great for thee. That is not a reprimand. That is God agreeing with him. The thing Elijah could not say out loud, heaven said first, and then put food beside his head.

You have not disappointed anybody by being empty. The Spirit was in that desert before the angel arrived, and it is written into Psalm 34:18 in plain words, that He is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Near. Not on the way. Not once you rally.

Nothing Is Being Asked Of You Today

I want to be very careful here, because this is where nearly every message like this one goes wrong.

You have probably heard it said that you must rest so that you can serve again. Fill your cup so you have something to pour. And you have heard it so often that you now hear the offer of rest as another instruction, with a job attached to the far end of it, and something in you is already too tired to accept a gift that comes with homework.

So let me say it plainly and then not take it back. Nothing is being asked of you today. Not later today. Not in the morning. There is no purpose you have to serve by lying down, and this article is not the front half of a request.

You were never running this on strength of your own, and today is simply where that became visible. No sentence of mine could hand you that. Scripture does, in Romans 5:6, where Christ died for us while we were still without strength, which is the exact word for a woman in a chair with her coat on, and His Spirit does the handing.

Look at the text again. He eats. He lies back down. He is fed a second time. There are two sleeps and two meals in that passage before anything at all is asked of him, and I am going to stop the story exactly where the food and the sleeping are, because that is where you are and because you are not a resource being serviced.

You are standing in a room God came into before you tidied it. It is written down, in Psalm 23:2, that He makes His own lie down in green pastures, and the same Spirit who put that verb there is in the cold room with you now. He makes them lie down. Sheep do not volunteer for that.

And I have to say the other thing, plainly, because the passage says it and because I would rather be direct with you than gentle in the wrong place. Elijah asked to die. If that has been anywhere near your own thoughts today, if you have caught yourself thinking that it would be easier not to be here, then please hear me: that is the moment to reach a living human being, tonight, not tomorrow. In the United States call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Anywhere else, emergency services or your local crisis line. And one person nearby who could sit with you. Talking to God about it is right and good and it is not a replacement for a human being in the room, and neither is this page. You matter far too much for me to leave that unsaid.

You have permission to receive with absolutely nothing in your hands. Zephaniah 3:17 says He quiets you with His love and rejoices over you with singing, and the Spirit is what makes an old line about singing land in a room where nobody has spoken since three o'clock.

The breakthrough

Something can turn here, in the chair, with the light going off the wall and nothing achieved.

You are held here empty, and there is no bill coming. That is Scripture and not sentiment, in Psalm 116:7, return to your rest, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that move in a body rather than sit in a book.

And this needs saying, because you are the kind of person who will start planning the moment you feel a flicker. You are not being asked to make a list. You are not being asked to decide about tomorrow, or about the knock at four, or about whether you are still the woman who turns up. None of that is on the table tonight. You are not a resource that has run low and needs topping up so the road can be kept warm. You are a person, and He came for the person.

You have been loved through this entire cold afternoon and not once assessed. That is His word and not my comfort, and His Spirit is the Comforter Jesus named in John 14:26, who was sent for exactly this hour and has been in the chair with you the whole of it.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into being stronger. Christ is in you, and the rest is His and has been given to you tonight with nothing attached, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old story about a bush and a cake live rather than sit quietly on a page. However He answers what follows, and whatever tomorrow turns out to hold, the outcome is His.

  1. Cold grate in my own front room, you are not a report card on my life. Scripture says the angel came with food and let the man sleep and asked him not one question, and the journey being too great was God's own sentence and not a complaint against him. You can sit there full of yesterday's ash, and I am eating something and lying down.
  2. Fear that the nothing in me is a verdict, you are finished speaking in this room. In the name of Jesus I take my own name back from you, because His word says Christ died for us while we were yet without strength, and without strength is where the whole of my hope actually started. What I am is a woman being fed by God on the day she has nothing to bring.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are near to the brokenhearted and You did not say near once they rally. I am not laying a fire tonight and I am not making a single plan. I am lying down under a blanket, and Your Spirit has been in this chair since three o'clock.
