The hall gets warm about twenty minutes in, always has, something to do with the radiators along the back wall and the number of coats piled on the chairs by the door.
Simone is where she has stood for nine years. Front left, half a step ahead of the others, close enough to the front row to see whose eyes are shut. The microphone is in her right hand at chest height, the way she holds it when the second verse is coming.
The second verse comes.
And nothing happens.
Not a crack, not a wrong note, not a voice going out. Nothing. Her mouth does not open. She stands there with the microphone at chest height and her lungs full of air and simply does not sing, and it is not a decision she makes, it is a thing she notices about herself, the way you notice rain.
Curtis on the keys is the first to know, because Curtis has played behind her for six years and he can hear the shape of her breath in the room. He does the small merciful thing that musicians do and moves his left hand down and fills the space so nobody hunts for it. The drummer looks over, understands nothing, keeps time. Behind Simone, forty people go on singing the second verse without her, because forty people know the second verse.
And then something happens that she is going to think about for a long while.
The room does not falter. It gets louder. Not on purpose, nobody organizes it, nobody so much as glances at her. The sound just comes up from behind her shoulders and around both sides of her, and it goes past her toward the front of the hall, and Simone stands in the middle of it with her mouth closed.
Mrs. Adeyemi in the second row, who is eighty-one and has never once been in tune, is going at it like the roof is the only thing stopping her. A teenager at the end of the third row with his hands in his coat pockets is singing without moving his face. The heater ticks. The whole room is full of it.
Simone lowers the microphone to her side.
Nine years. She has led this room through two funerals, a flood in the basement, and the winter everybody was sick. She knows how to hold a hall together with her voice when there is nothing in her chest but a rattle. She has done it more times than she would admit. And tonight, in a warm room with the radiators going and the coats piled by the door, there is nothing in her at all, not even the rattle, and the singing goes over her like weather.
She is not embarrassed. That is the strange part. She is standing in the middle of a sound she has poured nine years into and she is not producing one particle of it, and what she feels is not shame.
What she feels, and cannot name yet, is that she is being carried.
You know this, whether or not there was ever a hall in it. A kitchen. A car in a parking lot at seven in the morning. You know what it is to be the one who holds things up and to arrive at an evening with nothing left in your hands, and to stand there wondering, quietly, what you are worth in a room when you are not producing anything.
He Did Not Say Around
There is one preposition in Isaiah 43:2 that does all the work, and almost everybody hearing it wants a different one.
Read it slowly and watch what He does not promise.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.Isaiah 43:2
Through. Not around. Not instead of. He does not say the water will be moved out of your way, or drained, or reduced to something a person can wade. The water is a settled fact in that sentence. What He puts against it is not a route around, it is Himself, standing in it.
You are in the water with God and not on the bank waiting for Him to notice. Isaiah 43:2 says with you, plainly, before it says one word about the depth, and the Spirit is not asking you to get yourself dry before that sentence applies.
That matters tonight more than it usually does, because the temptation of an empty evening is to assume you have stepped outside the place where God deals with you. That the real Simone, the one He works with, is the one who sings, and this one standing here with the microphone down is a lapse to be got through and then not mentioned.
You have not fallen out of anything. No sentence of mine could settle that for you. Scripture settles it, when it says that neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation separates us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and His Spirit is what makes that a fact about a warm hall on a winter night rather than a nice line.
And look at who Isaiah is talking to. Not to people on their best evening. He is talking to a people in the middle of the water, already wet, already frightened, already tired of it, and the first thing out of His mouth is that they are His and He knows their name.
This Is Not A Refuel
Now here is where I want to be very careful, because there is a version of this teaching that would rob you at the exit, and it is the version almost everybody writes.
The version that says: rest, so that you can get back out there. Be filled, so that you can pour out again. Let the room carry you tonight, because next week the room needs carrying.
Read that again and notice what it does. It turns God's kindness into an investment with an expected return, and it makes a woman who is empty into a machine that is temporarily down. It hands her the bill on the way out the door.
You are being received tonight for no reason except that He wanted to. That is Scripture, not sentiment, and the Spirit is what makes it hold. His word says He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry with good things, and there is no clause attached anywhere about what the soul is expected to do next.
Take the whole thing apart to its studs. The mercy in that hall was toward Simone. Full stop. It was not a maintenance window. It was not an advance on next Sunday. Nobody in that room was topping up an instrument. Forty people sang and the sound went over a woman with her mouth closed, and heaven had nothing whatsoever to say about her productivity.
You were loved before you were ever useful to anybody. You are not taking my word for that. Romans 5:8 says that while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly, and the Spirit is what carries a sentence like that into a room where somebody has nothing left to give.
That verse is not about your worst behavior. Look at the actual word. Weak. Without strength. Nothing in the account, nothing in the hands. God moved first toward people who had nothing to offer Him, and He has never once revised the policy since.
You are held on an evening when you produce nothing at all. He promised never to leave you and never to forsake you, and His Spirit is what carries a promise like that off a page and into a room with the radiators ticking.
You have been carried tonight, and the carrying is the whole event. His word says He carries the lambs in His arms and gently leads those that are with young, and the Spirit does not put a lamb down at the edge of the field and ask what it intends to do about the walk back.
That is the turn, and there is nothing on the other side of it. No task. No next step you owe anybody. No arrangement where God covers this evening and you settle up later. The mercy is toward you, it is complete tonight, and there is nothing at the bottom of this page but the end of the page.
You are His, and it was never a wage. Scripture says it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, and the Spirit did not attach conditions to a gift after the fact.
And if the whole thing has left you frightened, because a person who cannot do the thing she is known for does not know who she is by Thursday, then hear this and let it stand. Who you are was settled before you had a voice, and it does not move when the voice does. The water is real. The depth is real. He is in it, He knows your name, and He is not standing on the bank calling instructions across.
Declare this over yourself
- Microphone I could not lift tonight, you are not the measure of one thing about me. Scripture says He is with me in the water and never once promised the water would be shallow, so a shut mouth in a loud room is a woman standing in the river with God. I am sitting down with my hands open.
- Fear that I am only what I produce, you have no seat in this hall. Jesus came across the water to men who were getting nowhere and got into the boat with them before He did one single thing about the wind. In the name of Jesus I am received tonight exactly as I came in.
- Lord, You are in the water and You did not send word across from the bank. Your word says that when I pass through the rivers they do not overwhelm me, and Your Spirit is the reason there is breath in me at all in a room I could not sing in. I am sitting down and letting the singing come over me.
