Held When EmptyPsalm 23:2

The Field He Cannot Work Today

This message is for A man whose entire sense of his own worth has been what he is able to do for other people, sitting at the edge of his own field on the first morning of his life when he cannot do any of it.

Six in the morning, the dew still up, and Owen is sitting on the tailgate at the edge of his own field with a mug he did not make himself.

The doctor said six weeks. He said it twice, the second time slower, looking at Owen the way a man looks at somebody he has known since school and does not intend to argue with. No lifting. Nothing over ten pounds. Six weeks, and he meant it, and Owen is going to do what he said, because Deb was in the room.

Down in the bottom of the field there is a tractor going that is not his tractor.

That is the part he cannot get his mind around. Ellis Wray brought it over at half past five without asking anybody. Corinne left something on the step in a dish with a towel over it and drove off before the dog even got going. Somebody has done the water. Somebody has done the water, and he does not know who, and that is the detail that keeps catching him under the ribs like a nail in a board.

Forty one years he has been the one who turns up.

He is the man who is there at half past five with the tractor. He is the one who does somebody else's water the week their mother is dying. He has stood in twenty kitchens in this county putting a dish down on a step and leaving before anybody could thank him, and he has never once thought about it afterward, because it was nothing, because it is what a man does, because it costs a morning and a morning is not much.

And now the dish is on his step.

He sits on the tailgate with both hands on his knees, and his hands look wrong to him. They look like something that has been set down. Forty one years of knowing exactly who he is, and it turns out that the whole of it was standing on one word, and the word was a verb, and the verb has been taken away for six weeks and he cannot find himself anywhere in what is left.

He is not in pain. He is not even worried about the field, the field will be fine, the field is being done right now by better men than him.

He simply does not know what he is for this morning.

You know that tailgate. It might not be a field for you. It might be the week you could not get out of the chair, or the run of days when the thing you have always been able to do for everybody was suddenly the thing you could not do at all, and somebody came and did it, and you stood there with your hands empty and something in your chest went hot and shameful, and you could not have explained it to anybody in words that made sense.

The Verb You Have Been Standing On

Let me name the thing gently, because it is not a sin and I am not going to treat it like one.

Somewhere a long way back, you attached who you are to what you can do. Not on purpose. Nobody sits down at twenty two and decides that. It happens the way a path gets worn across a yard: you were useful, and it worked, and people were glad, and you found that being the one who turns up is a solid thing to stand on when a man is not sure what else he is. And it held. For forty one years it held beautifully.

And then a doctor says six weeks, and the whole thing is out from under you in an afternoon.

You were loved before you ever lifted one thing, and the loving did not begin with your usefulness. Jeremiah 31:3 already said He loved you with an everlasting love, and the Spirit is not asking you to add anything to that this morning, on this tailgate, with those hands lying still on your knees.

Everlasting reaches backward as well as forward. That is what the word means. It was in force before your first day of work and it did not consult your output once in four decades.

You are being held today by the very same hands that made the ground you cannot walk out onto. That is Scripture, not sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it move: underneath are the everlasting arms, and arms underneath a man are not measuring what he is carrying.

Now hear the second thing, because it is the one that has your chest hot.

Nothing about you has been reduced. Not your standing, not your name, not your place at any table in this county, not one thing in Heaven's account of who you are. A man on a tailgate is the same man as the man on the tractor. You have not been set aside, and nothing about you was made smaller this week. You are not taking my word for it. His word says a bruised reed He does not break and smoking flax He does not quench, and the Spirit is what carries a sentence like that off a page and out to a field edge at six in the morning.

He Makes Me Lie Down

Here is the verse, and I want you to look hard at who is doing what in it.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.Psalm 23:2

The sheep is not resting. The sheep is being made to rest. That is an active verb with the Shepherd's hand on it, and it is one of the tenderest lines in the whole Book once you see what it is doing.

Sheep do not lie down easily. Anybody who has kept them knows it. A sheep lies down when it is not hungry, not frightened, not bothered by pests and not at odds with the others, and getting all four of those true at once is the shepherd's work and nobody else's. The lying down in that verse is not the sheep giving up. It is the shepherd having succeeded.

You are being made to lie down, and the making is a kindness rather than a sentence. It is written down, in Psalm 23:2, that He makes me to lie down in green pastures, and the same Spirit who put that verb in the Shepherd's hands is out at the edge of your field this morning while somebody else's tractor works your bottom acres.

And now the thing that is actually hard for you, harder than the six weeks.

You have to let it be done to you.

There was a night when a man who had walked on water pulled his feet back and said no, not me, You are not washing me. And he was not being humble. He was doing exactly what you are doing on that tailgate: he could not stand to be on the receiving end of anything. You are receiving this morning, and receiving is not the lesser half of anything. The Spirit settled that in you before you read a word of this, and John 13:8 says it in plain terms: unless He washes a man, that man has no part with Him. Even Peter had to sit still and let his feet be held.

One more, and this is the one I most want you to have.

You are not being rested up for anything, and there is no second half to this. No arrangement of mine sits behind that sentence. Scripture says He restores my soul, and the line simply stops there with no condition bolted onto the end of it, and His Spirit is what keeps it from quietly turning into an arrangement in your head by Thursday.

This is not fuel. Nobody is filling you so that you get back out there and are useful again by the spring. The mercy on you today is toward you, full stop, the way it would be toward anybody, and there is nothing at the end of it that you owe to any person living.

The breakthrough

Here is what is coming loose while you sit there.

You have been carrying a quiet arithmetic that says a man is worth what he produces, and this week it produced a verdict on you, and the verdict was wrong. It was not wrong because you are secretly still useful in some way you have not thought of yet. It was wrong because the arithmetic itself was never God's.

You are exactly the same man you were on the last morning you could lift a bale. That is Scripture, not sentiment: man looks on the outward appearance and the Lord looks on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a line like that reach a man sitting on a tailgate with a mug he did not make.

Ellis Wray did not bring that tractor over because of what Owen has done for him. He brought it because Owen was in trouble and he had a tractor, which is the whole of what mercy has ever been, and Owen has done it forty one times himself and never once stood in a yard totting up whether the person deserved the morning.

The dish on the step is not a debt. Let me say that as plainly as I know how. It is not a debt, there is no repayment, there is no ledger anywhere in this and nobody is keeping one but you.

You are being led beside still water while a tractor you never sent for works your ground. It is written, in Psalm 23:2, that He leads me beside the still waters, and the same Spirit who wrote the leading into that sentence is doing it in a field in your county this week, in daylight, where you can watch it happen.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Field I cannot work today, you are not the measure of me and you never were. The word says the Shepherd makes me lie down in green pastures, and I am lying down in them. You can wait.
  2. Shame at an empty pair of hands, get off me. In the name of Jesus you have no claim in this yard. The Lord looks on the heart while men look at what a man can lift, and my hands are open on my knees this morning.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are the Shepherd who puts me in the grass and leads me to the quiet water. You have never once loved me for my output and You are not starting now. I am sitting here with my hands turned over, and I am letting You do it.
