The light in this lot at half past six is the good kind, low and orange, coming in flat under the cart corral and turning every windshield into a sheet of copper. Dana is sitting in her car with the engine off and the bag of groceries belted into the passenger seat, because it tipped over once and she has never forgotten it.
Two spaces over, a woman is having a slow evening. She has a toddler on one hip and a paper bag that has gone soft at the seam and a cart that is starting to roll, gently, the way carts do on a lot that is not quite level. She catches the cart with her knee. The bag slips another inch.
Dana sees all of it. She sees it the way you see a thing you have already decided about.
Something in her chest does not move. It is not coldness exactly. It is more like a door that closes so smoothly and so quietly that you would not know it had a latch. She looks back down at her phone. She has a text to answer. She is tired. The woman gets the cart, gets the bag, gets the door, and is gone in under forty seconds, and nothing at all has happened.
And here is the part Dana does not see, because it happened four years ago in this same lot, at this same hour, in this same seat.
She had driven a person to appointments for fourteen months. Not grudgingly. Gladly, mostly. She had rearranged her whole calendar around it and she would have told you at the time that it was the best thing she did all year. And then in this parking lot, on an evening the exact color of this one, she found out what that person had been saying about her to other people. Not something small. Something untrue, and repeated, and easy.
She did not cry. She sat with her hands on the wheel and the light going orange on the hood and she said one sentence out loud, to nobody, in a very calm voice.
Never again the first one.
That was it. That was the whole rule, six words, and she has kept it beautifully. It has never let her down. It has saved her time and it has saved her from at least two situations she is glad she stayed out of. It runs quietly, in the background, without ever announcing itself, which is why she has not thought about it once in three years and why she did not hear it speak just now, two spaces over, in the good orange light.
You have one of these. Not the same words and not the same lot, but you made one, on a specific day, in a specific chair, after something specific happened. And it worked. That is what nobody says out loud about the rules we make in parking lots. They work. And you are so used to the quiet where your old warmth used to be that you have started to think the quiet is simply who you are now.
The Rule Worked, And That Is The Whole Problem
Let me say the thing that most writing about this refuses to say. You were not being stupid. You were not lacking discernment. You did not fail some test of Christian softness that better people pass. Something real happened to you, and you did what any creature with a nervous system does after a burn, which is you learned the shape of the stove.
Nobody is going to take that away from you here, and I am not going to spend the next thousand words hinting that you should feel bad about it.
You were not wrong to protect what was left of you. The Spirit was already at work on that ground long before you opened this, and Ezekiel 36:26 says out loud what He is doing about it, which is nothing at all like a scolding.
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 36:26
Look at who is holding the instruments in that sentence. Every single verb belongs to God. He gives. He puts. He removes. He gives again. There is no line in there where the person with the stone heart is told to soften up, try harder, be less careful, or account for how the stone got there in the first place.
That matters more than it looks. Because when a person notices they have gone hard, the very first thing they reach for is effort. They decide to be warmer. They resolve to say yes more. And by Thursday they are exactly where they were, plus a fresh layer of private disappointment, because you cannot press a heart of stone into a heart of flesh with your hands. Stone does not respond to effort. It responds to being replaced.
You are being softened without one word of scolding attached to it. That is not a compliment from me. It is written into Ezekiel 36:26 in the plainest words the prophet had, and His Spirit is what makes that more than a nice sentence about you.
And notice something about stone in Scripture. It is almost never a verdict on a person's character. It is what happens to ground that has had no water for a long time. Hardness is a description of a condition, not a diagnosis of a soul, which is why God treats it as something to be removed rather than something to be argued with.
He Never Asked You To Explain Yourself First
Here is the part that undoes people, in a good way.
There is no apology anywhere in Ezekiel 36. Read the whole chapter and look for it. God is speaking to a people whose situation is entirely their own doing, and He states that plainly, and then He says He is going to act, and the reason He gives is His own name and His own nature. Not their improvement. Not their explanation. He does not require them to account for the stone before He agrees to take it out.
You have a heart of flesh, and it was given rather than grown. Ezekiel 36:26 already named who does the removing, and the Spirit is not standing outside waiting for your permission slip.
So you do not have to go back over the four years. You do not have to work out whether you overreacted. You do not have to decide tonight whether that person deserved what you decided about them, and you certainly do not have to say anything to anybody about the state of your heart. None of that is the doorway. The doorway is much smaller and much closer.
You are standing on ground God has already decided to water. That is Scripture, not encouragement, and the Holy Spirit is what makes stone move.
I want to name something else, because it is the fear sitting under the whole thing. Somewhere in you is the suspicion that if the rule comes off, you go straight back to being the person who got used. That the only two options are a woman with a wall and a woman with a wound. That is not the choice you are being offered, and it never was.
The new heart in that verse is not a soft target. It is a heart of flesh, which is the kind that is alive, which is the kind that feels things, including the sensible warning that arrives when something is off. Flesh has nerves. Stone does not. Softness is not the removal of your judgment; it is the return of your sensation.
You have been carried through four years of that rule without a single word of reproach. You are not taking my word for that. His word says He gives a heart of flesh and takes the other one out Himself, and the same Spirit who put that sentence in the book has been in the car with you the whole time.
So stop waiting to feel different before anything can happen. That order was never the order.
You are being met exactly where the rule was made, and not where you wish you were standing. The word says He removes the heart of stone, and it is the Spirit of God, never a resolution you grind out on a Sunday night, doing the removing.
Nothing here asks you to take the rule down. Notice that. The rule can stay right where it is tonight. You are not being asked to become a person with no protection, no discernment and no memory. You are being asked for something much smaller: to let one thing through the gap. One. Tonight.
You have nothing to explain before mercy starts moving through your hands again. Nothing in Scripture asks you to file a report first, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the door of that car waiting for an apology He never requested.
And if tonight there is nothing in you at all, that is allowed too, and it is not a failure of anything. Some evenings the tank is empty. A person with an empty tank is not a hard person; they are a tired person, and God is not confused about the difference. You are not being billed for this.
Declare this over yourself
- Rule I made in a parking lot, you are not my character and you do not run this evening. God says He takes the stone out Himself, and the ground underneath it is already soft.
- Fear that I turned into a hard woman, you are dismissed from this car. Ezekiel 36:26 says the heart of flesh is given and never earned, and in the name of Jesus I am carrying the heart He handed me.
- Lord, You take the stone out Yourself and You never once asked me to apologize for the way I healed. Your Spirit has been in the passenger seat for four years and has not been irritated with me for one of them. I am saying the sentence out loud tonight, and then I am holding the next door I come to.
