Softened AgainEzekiel 11:19

The Extra Plate She Stopped Setting

This message is for The woman who set an extra plate for whoever turned up until the year somebody took advantage of it, and who now sets exactly the right number.

Loretta lays the porch table the way she has laid it for thirty one years, and it takes her about ninety seconds now, because there are four plates and she knows exactly where four plates go.

The light is coming in low and orange under the porch roof, the way it does in the last half hour, and it is putting a long bar of gold across the tablecloth and up the screen door. The ceiling fan turns slow enough to count. Somewhere down the road a truck door shuts. There is that smell in the air of rain that has not arrived yet and might not.

Fork, knife, glass. Fork, knife, glass. Four times.

She used to set five.

Not for anybody in particular. That was the whole point of it. Her mother laid an extra place every night of her life and so did her mother's mother, and the rule in this house was simple and never explained: somebody might come. A cousin driving through. The kid from two doors down whose folks worked late. A man off the county road who had nowhere in particular to be that evening. The fifth plate meant nobody ever had to ask.

The fifth plate is at the back of the cupboard now. Blue rim, small chip at four o'clock. It has been back there for six years, behind the roasting pan, in that spot where you have to move two things to reach it.

Loretta will not be telling you what happened. It is hers, and she does not owe the story to anybody, including me. What can be said is that there was a stretch of one winter when she gave and gave and gave, and it ended in a way that left her sitting in her car in a parking lot at ten in the morning with her hands shaking, and something in her went quiet after that, and stayed quiet.

She is not bitter. Ask anybody. She is kind at church, she is generous at Christmas, she takes food to the sick. She just counts now. She counts before she gives, and the counting has become so smooth she no longer notices she is doing it.

Four plates. Exactly four. Never a fifth, not once in six years.

She stands back and looks at the table, and it is a good table, and it is correct, and it is the right number.

And out in the yard the light goes from orange to that deeper color it gets right before it goes.

You have a plate at the back of a cupboard too. Maybe it is not a plate. Maybe it is a spare key you stopped keeping on the nail, or the porch light you stopped leaving on, or a habit of saying yes before you had finished hearing the question. There was a year that cost you something, and you closed a hand you used to keep open, and nobody has ever once told you that you were wrong to close it. Nobody is going to tell you that here either. But you know the difference between careful and closed, and lately, in the last hour of the day, you have caught yourself missing the woman who set five.

Nobody Here Is Going To Ask For The Details

Let me say the thing that has to be said before anything else in this piece can be trusted.

You are somebody who kept an extra place at the table for thirty years, and nothing that happened has taken that out of you. The Spirit put that generosity in you long before anybody ever sat down in that chair, and it is written into Ezekiel 11:19 that the heart of flesh is God's work, given and not manufactured.

So no rebuke is coming. Not from this page. The people who tell a bruised person they have gone cold have usually never been used by anybody, and it shows in how quickly they say it.

You have been protecting something that was genuinely worth protecting. Proverbs 4:23 says to guard the heart, because everything in a life flows out of it, and His Spirit is not embarrassed by a person who took that seriously after a hard year.

Here is the distinction this whole message stands on, and it is not a small one. What happened to you did not change your character. It changed a habit. Character is climate and habits are weather, and weather can sit over a valley for six years and still be weather. You did not become a different woman in a parking lot with your hands shaking. You made one entirely reasonable adjustment, and then the adjustment kept running long after the reason for it went home.

That is not sin. That is a door that swung shut and never got opened again because nobody was standing there to open it.

Which brings us to the verse this article is built on, and to the strangest thing about it.

I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 11:19

You were never asked to be the one who takes the stone out. Ezekiel 11:19 hands every single verb in that sentence to God, I will give, I will put, I will remove, and His Spirit does the removing at a pace He sets and you are not required to hurry.

Read it again and count the imperatives aimed at the person with the stony heart. There are none. Not one. He does not say try harder, feel more, open up, get over it. He says I will remove. The whole weight of the softening sits on the wrong side of the sentence from where we usually put it.

The Stone Comes Out By Hands That Are Not Yours

So what is left for you to do, if the surgery is His?

One plate. That is what is left for you to do.

You are holding one plate, and one plate is the entire assignment. You do not have to take that from me. Luke 6:36 says to be merciful as your Father is merciful, and the Spirit is what carries a sentence like that off the page and into an ordinary Thursday evening on a porch.

Notice what one plate is not. It is not a promise to whoever might sit there. It is not a return to the year that cost you. It is not you standing in your kitchen deciding to feel differently about people, which has never worked for anybody and was never asked of you.

You have been given a heart of flesh, and flesh is soft on purpose. It is written down, in that same line in Ezekiel, and the same Spirit who spoke it over a whole people sitting a long way from home is standing on your porch while the light goes from orange to the deeper color.

Flesh bruises. That is the honest part nobody says out loud, and it is why the careful woman keeps counting. Stone does not bruise. Stone is an excellent material for a heart if the only thing you are optimizing for is never being hurt again. It is a poor material for absolutely everything else, and you already know that, which is why you are still reading in the last hour of the day.

You are being softened by somebody who has never once asked you to be foolish about it. No advice of mine could hold both of those at the same time. Scripture does, and His Spirit does: be wise as serpents and harmless as doves came out of one mouth in one sentence, and He never treated the two halves as a contradiction.

Soft is not naive. A woman can set a fifth plate and still know exactly who she is not lending her car to. Those are different faculties and they run on different circuits, and the enemy of your soul has spent six years persuading you that they are the same one.

The breakthrough

Now put the counting down for one minute, because there is something being handed to you and it has nothing to do with your performance.

You are being met by a God who has never once required you to explain yourself first. Psalm 103:14 says He remembers what we are made of, that we are dust, and the Spirit does not stand over a bruise with a clipboard and a list of where you went wrong.

He was in the parking lot. He was there in the car with your hands shaking, and He did not think less of you for a single second of it, and He has not spent six years waiting for you to snap out of it.

You have already been carried by the exact mercy you have stopped believing you can give. His word says He is merciful and gracious and abundant in mercy toward people who could not pay Him back for any of it, and the Spirit is what makes that land somewhere lower than your head.

That is the ground. Mercy runs downhill from a place you were already put. Nobody is asking you to generate warmth out of a cold season. You are being asked to notice that the warmth in you was never yours in the first place, which means the winter could not have taken it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the porch if the porch is where you are. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not mine to lend. It is Christ's, and in Him it has been given to you to speak what He has already settled. What He does with the softening after that is His to decide, and however He answers, what you spoke stays true.

  1. Fifth plate at the back of the cupboard, you are not evidence against me. The Word says God gives a heart of flesh and He gives it Himself, so this shelf is not a courtroom. Tonight you come out and you sit at the front where I can see you.
  2. Fear that I turned into a hard woman, get off my porch. Jesus called mercy one of the weightier things and I am His, and stone was never my character. In the name of Jesus, I am setting this table wider than the number.
  3. Lord, You take the stone out Yourself and You have never once handed me the tools. Your word says You give a new spirit and a heart of flesh, and Your Spirit is doing it while I stand here with a dish in my hands. I am putting it at the front of the shelf tonight.
