Twenty to six. The window in Alma's room faces east and the gray is just starting to go gold along the bottom of the sky, over the roof of the house across the way.
She is already up. She has been up since half past five, the way she has been for three years, because if she is not up before the rest of the house she does not get a minute of it at all. The mug of instant is on the sill. The paint on the ledge has bubbled up in one spot and she picks at it while she prays, which she knows she does and has never once managed to stop.
She says the name.
And she hears herself.
That is the whole trouble, right there. She hears herself say it, and it comes out flat and quick, the way you read a name off a list at the bottom of a form. Same words as yesterday. Same order. No heat in it anywhere. Her jaw is tight the entire time and when she gets to the end she does not say amen so much as put it down.
Three years of this. The same person down the hall, the same need, coming back around like weather. She has done it well. Nobody could say she has not done it well. She has been up before the light and she has stayed up past it, and there is a whole file of small ordinary things in her head that nobody else in that house knows she keeps track of.
And this morning she stood at the window with a cold mug and thought a sentence she has never said to another living soul: I do not know if I love them anymore. I think I just do the tasks.
That is not a nice thing to think at twenty to six. She put the mug in the sink and did not think it again all day, until the next morning at twenty to six, when she thought it again.
Down the hall a door goes. The house is starting.
You know that window. You know how it sounds when your own voice goes flat on a name you would have died for once. And somewhere in there you have started keeping a private accusation about yourself, and you have never told anybody it is there, and it comes to see you at the same time every morning.
God Never Once Graded Your Tone
Let me get to the accusation, because you cannot hear anything else while it is standing there.
You think the flatness means the love has gone. That is the whole fear, in six words, and it is wrong, and I want to take it apart in front of you.
You have been faithful for three years, and faithful is what that is called. Scripture says God looks on the heart rather than on the outside of a thing, and the Holy Spirit has been reading yours correctly every single morning at that window, including the flat ones.
Look at what you actually did. You got up. In the dark. Before anybody. With nothing in the tank and nothing coming back, and you said the name anyway. Do you understand what that is? That is not the residue of love. That is love in its working clothes, with the makeup off, on a Tuesday, doing the thing it said it would do.
Feelings are the froth on the top of the cup. They come and they go and they are affected by sleep and weather and the last thing somebody said in a hallway. What you did at that window was the cup.
You are being held together by God on the days you are running on nothing. He promised strength to the ones with none of their own, and Isaiah 40:31 is where it is written down, and His Spirit is what makes an old line like that reach a woman picking at paint on a sill.
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.Isaiah 40:31
Notice who that verse is aimed at. Read the two verses before it if you have a moment. It is written to people who have already collapsed. Even the youths faint, it says. Even the young men fall down flat. The whole promise is built for the ones who are out, and if you had any strength left you would not be in the verse.
You are exactly the person that promise was written for. The Spirit put those words into Isaiah for the spent, and the word renew is only ever used about something that has already been used up.
Renewed Is Not The Same As Never Spent
Here is where the church has sometimes done a bad job, and I want to correct it in your hearing.
Renewal is not being given a tank that never empties. It has never meant that. Look at how God actually feeds people in Scripture. Bread on the ground, six mornings a week, enough for that day and no more, and the portion anybody hoarded went bad by morning. That is not a design flaw. That is the arrangement.
You are being given today's portion, and today's portion is the whole of what you have to carry. It is written into the Lord's own prayer, give us this day our daily bread, and the same Spirit who taught that prayer has no interest in handing you a year's worth this morning.
That is why the arithmetic in your head at twenty to six is so heavy. You are not tired from today. You are tired from today plus every day you have imagined in advance. Nobody was ever given strength for imagined days, and that is not a shortage on His side. It is the way the manna falls.
Now I have to say something plainly, and I am saying it to whoever needs it and passing straight on if it is not you.
Endurance is not the answer to danger. If what is happening in your house is hurting you or frightening you, if you are being harmed, then staying is not what mercy means and nobody in heaven is asking it of you. Getting help is the right move and it is the merciful one. Tell somebody today, a doctor, a pastor, a friend, a helpline, anybody outside those walls, and let this article go. Patience is a word about long ordinary weeks. It has never once been a word about being hurt.
You have been valued by God at a price that settles what you are worth to Him. Scripture says we were bought at a price, and His Spirit does not station anybody in a place that is destroying them.
For the rest, the ordinary long haul of it: nothing in this asks you to fix the person down the hall. You are not their outcome. You are not the reason it has gone on this long and you are not going to be the reason it turns. You have been asked for today's ordinary care and nothing beyond it.
So let me put the accusation down for you, since you cannot get your hands free to do it yourself.
You are not a woman who has stopped loving. No reassurance of mine could carry that far. Scripture does: the word says love bears and endures, and endurance is precisely what a love looks like once the froth is gone, and His Spirit has been calling it by that name the whole time you were calling it something else.
The flat voice is not a symptom. It is a receipt. It is what is left in the hand of somebody who has been paying out for three years without anybody at the counter saying thank you.
You are being met this morning at the exact place you ran out. Isaiah 40:31 already said the renewing goes to the ones who wait, and the Spirit is what turns that from a sentence on a page into strength in a body at twenty to six.
And notice the order in the verse, because it goes downward and that is deliberate. Mount up with wings. Then run. Then walk. It ends on walking, which is the least glamorous of the three, and it is the one most people actually need. Nobody is asking you to soar today. Walk and do not faint is the promise, and walking is what you have been doing all along.
You are carrying today, and today is all that has been put into your hands. He promised His mercies are new every morning, and it is written in Lamentations 3:23, and His Spirit brings the new batch without a word about yesterday's.
Declare this over yourself
- Same name at the same window, you are not too worn out to be carried. Scripture says those who wait on the Lord have their strength renewed, and renewed is a word made for the spent. I am saying you again this morning.
- Voice that comes out flat, you are not the measure of my love. Scripture says God looks on the heart and not on the sound of a thing, and the Holy Spirit has been reading mine correctly for three years. I am carrying today's portion with a tight jaw and steady hands.
- Lord, You are the God who renews the strength of everyone who waits on You, and Your word promised walking without fainting to people who have nothing left. In the name of Jesus I am taking today's portion out of Your hand and none of tomorrow's. I am putting the kettle on and deciding nothing else.
